Retail Gurus Giving Advice...

Retail?Gurus (veterans) that are still in the game, The “New Talent” is stepping onto the field. We need to mentor, guide and advise this new group so that we may move to corporate positions or retirement. But before we go on these new adventures what advice do you want to leave as a legacy to those just starting the journey? (I hope you all will participate, this should be good!)

I have a few topics I'd like to share and it’s my newsletter, so I will go first. Please add your advice in the comments:

1.Being a leader isn’t just about holding the keys.

  1. Don’t ask anyone to do anything you wouldn’t do.
  2. Don’t take feedback so personally. It’s someone’s perception, it’s work, take it on the chin and be better, grow and develop. Ask for feedback, it will make the unsolicited have less sting for sure.
  3. Avoid burnout by going home as scheduled, take your vacation time.
  4. Do not feel obligated to take your lunch with the team. Go where you can recharge, refocus and get some peace. Do go to lunch with the team, if it relieves stress.Laughter works for me!
  5. Bring fun to the workplace. If you don’t know what your team would find as fun, ask them.
  6. Trust yourself to have good judgment. Self doubt will keep you up all night!
  7. Share your vision. It’s easier to gain alignment when everyone knows the goal.
  8. Seek out the new people. Help them adjust, show them the ropes, answer questions, invite them to lunch. #inclusionmeanseveryone
  9. Create a "safe space" culture. Have a zero tolerance attitude about poor behaviors.

I definitely could continue dropping these nuggets of wisdom like if you put paper in your folded shirts you will inevitably have paper on the floor. But I will wait for your adds can’t wait to hear from you all!

I’m Cheryl, retail guru with over 25 years of experience. Sharing my thoughts experience and advice for those of us living the retail life.
