Hello, Caring Economy Enthusiasts,

I’m Toby Usnik, and I am thrilled to share the latest episode of The Caring Economy podcast with you. Listen to the full episode here ??

Father Leahy’s Remarkable Journey

Father Edwin Leahy’s journey is a testament to commitment, resilience, and transformative leadership. He became the 23rd Headmaster of St. Benedict’s Prep in 1972, a role he assumed at the age of 26. Under his guidance, the school reopened its doors after a brief closure, starting with just 89 students and 14 faculty members, including thirteen monks.

Today, St. Benedict’s Prep serves over 1,000 students from diverse backgrounds, offering a co-ed K-6 Elementary Division, a co-ed 7th-8th grade Middle Division, a Boys Prep Division, and a Girls Prep Division. Nearly 6,000 alumni have graduated from St. Benedict’s, with an astounding 100% of recent graduates continuing on to college.

Building Community and Embracing Diversity

Father Leahy’s approach to education is unique and profoundly impactful. St. Benedict’s operates like a diner, open 24/7, providing a safe and nurturing environment for its students. The school’s philosophy revolves around building a strong community, understanding each other’s realities, and sharing in each other’s sufferings and joys.

Father Leahy shared a poignant story from his early years, illustrating the importance of understanding different perspectives. He recounted his experience in Kansas, where farmers measured rainfall in fractions of inches, highlighting how crucial it is to appreciate the diverse realities people live in.

A Legacy of Inclusivity

In 2020, St. Benedict’s expanded to include a Girls Prep Division in response to the closure of two schools for girls in Newark. This move was driven by the students themselves, demonstrating the school’s student-led model. The girls at St. Benedict’s participate in all activities, from orientation on the gym floor to backpacking the Appalachian Trail, fostering a sense of empowerment and leadership.
