The Resurrected Living Word Rules with an Iron Sceptre, Part 2

Jesus—who is God, who was born Lord, and who was a display of God’s living Word in operation—died. But in a demonstration of his invincible life and eternally irrepressible triumph, he rose again. Now, he again has all authority, and he rules the nations with an “iron scepter”:

(Revelation 19:13–15 NHEB) He is clothed in a garment dipped in blood. His name is called "The Word of God." … Out of his mouth proceeds a sharp sword, that with it he should strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of God, the Almighty.

The word of God is God:

(John 1:1 NKJV) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

God’s word is dominant and eternal:

(Luke 21:33 WEB) Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my word shall not pass away.

(Luke 1:37 ASV) For no word from God shall be void of power.

What God says, he does; nothing and no one is greater, nor can they stop whatever he says from prevailing. It may not always be instant, but it will surely happen. For example, Jesus said of the temple at Jerusalem, “Not one stone shall be left here upon another” (Mat. 24:2 NKJV). It remained intact until around 70 AD (at least several decades after he made this statement), but then every word Jesus spoke over it came to pass. God is good that way; he always declares his intention:

(Amos 3:7 NKJV) “Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.”

A prophet is simply a human mouthpiece for God on earth. God’s written word is amazing, eternal, and permanent. But when God speaks a “now” word, it is supernatural, powerful, and unstoppable. However, it has to be spoken on earth for it to have authority here. It also has to be received and believed in a human heart to be licensed for the Holy Spirit and God’s angels to enact it.

We see in our opening passage that Jesus has a “sharp sword”:

(Revelation 19:15 NHEB) Out of his mouth proceeds a sharp sword, that with it he should strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron scepter. …

We see that the sword is coming “out of his mouth.” This implies that this sword is the spoken word of God—the “now” word spoken by the living Word. It is God’s weapon, and we see that with it he will “strike down the nations” (NLT).

The living word is our weapon:

(Ephesians 6:17 NKJV) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

(Hebrews 4:12 NKJV) For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The living Word of God is a “sharp” sword. God knows how to speak deeply into situations, coming to the point, and cutting to the heart—both of people and problems. He can cut down world dominant empires and rulers, but he can also cut to the heart of interpersonal conflicts and challenges. He can divide “joints” and “marrow”; he can differentiate actions from motives, and he can discern between “thoughts” and the “intents of the heart.”

When God speaks: to us, his living word brings light, love, healing, life, revelation, faith, and direction; but to his enemies, it announces judgment, outcomes, downfalls, timelines, and when “time’s up” for their role in prominent positions. When we receive it, believe it, nurture it, act on it, and speak it; God’s living word can move mountains, heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out demons. As directed by the Holy Spirit, we can declare it prophetically over individuals, families, churches, cities, and nations. We can also wield it as a sword against God’s enemies and recalcitrant circumstances. Whatever God sends his word to do, can happen—from heal the sick (Psalm 107:20), to move mountains:

(Mark 11:23 NKJV) “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”

Today, I encourage you; press into God; hear and receive what he is saying to you—it will bring light to your darkness, life to your despondency, health to your flesh, faith to your heart, and it will renew your thinking. Listen for what the Holy Spirit quickens to you for prayer at God’s throne. There, the living word will prevail and bring clear-cut answers. But also listen for what the Lord of Lords wants you to speak prophetically in his authoritative name. He may have a message for a loved one, a word for your church, a letter he wants you to write, or a prophecy he wants you to declare out into the spirit realm:

(Ezekiel 37:9 DKJV) Then he said to me, “Prophesy unto the wind (spirit), prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.’”

You can be Jesus’s mouthpiece today, and have his sharp two-edged sword wielded via you. As you speak into the situation to which he assigns you, you will see his “all authority” turn the tide and shape the future.
