Resumes Don't Get Jobs

Resumes Don't Get Jobs

Nearly every expert I have ever spoken to tells me that "resumes don't get jobs." Truth is virtually all professionals out there on this planet have pretty strong resumes. That's because there are nearly 20 million influencers giving about 40 million + tips on like 20+ social media platforms.

So more than likely if you are a professional with a career longer than a minute, you have heard every one of these resume tips nearly 400x.

Could your resume be better? Of course. Anything can be improved upon. Coca Cola is still tweaking how to get us to buy its soda, 130 years later.

Good news! There are plenty of resources to go to for that resume re-write.

Literally this minute 300k+ organizations worldwide are ready and willing to do your resume for you and/or give you tips on how to DIY.

But for many, professionally drafted resume now in hand, there's this result:

No interviews.
Or, interviews, but no offers.
Or, offers that couldn't close.

So what's next? When the professional written resume failed?

For professionals, often, it's an even more expensive re-write.

Not kidding.

That's the typical; 75% of the time, next step.

It's that thinking if the $299 package failed me, then maybe the $1000 one will work? If that $1000 re-write failed; time to try the $5000 one? And in case you are wondering what the max amount someone I personally know has paid for a resume -- it's $32,000. Literally he paid for a resume writer to create every resume he submitted, tweaking it to the position to make it ATS friendly.

And the result?

No job offer he accepted.

Why is this?

Why do we have our own stories of paying for a new resume (or doing a DIY) and seeing no change in our results?

Why do we have stories from friends, family, and strangers who paid for a new resume (or did a DIY) and saw no change in results?

Resumes don't get jobs. ??

I've been helping people for over 30 years and spoken to hundreds of thousands of recruiters and hiring managers representing every industry, sector, in small and even massive companies. Every single one of these people will tell you if asked that the resumes they see, for professional jobs, are mostly excellent. But they are rejecting 98% of them for interviews and 80% of them for offers.

Those are the national stats.

On average 250 applications per posting. On average 5 selected for interviews.

It's going to take an internal referral to get that interview. And that's why most of our effort with our JobMorph clients is really spend on helping people build their professional network; helping them get those internal referrals.

And it's going to take strong interview (and negotiation skills) to land that offer. And that's why most of our effort with our JobMorph clients is really spent on developing interviewing and negotiation skills.

And this is the interesting part, almost everyone misses.

It's going to take a sophisticated analytics driven organizational system. We find that without this type of system, most job seekers don't have the data or the analytics they need to make the right decisions about where to apply, when to follow-up, and also waste a ton of time.

We have found, time and time again, that the strong resume (maybe tweaked a bit), when combined with an internal referral + strong interview (and negotiation skills) + an our organizational system gets results.

  • It gets interviews for the jobs you truly want.
  • It gets offers (60% of the time we're seeing multiple offers).
  • It gets you the skills (and support) you need to successfully negotiate the offer.

And you know what's even better -- 97% of the time, one year later, the client is still with their employer with no desire to move anywhere else.

Because in the end, when it's all said and done, it's not just about finding some job; it's about finding your dream job.

And that's where that emphasis simply on a document to sell yourself misses completely. It's not really taking into account the BIG idea (we have) of helping you find jobs you really want, get interviews for those particular jobs, and negotiate the offer(s) that come.
