The Resume in any form be it paper, digital, form, or social media form tells a story about the person the resume represents. Yes you heard me correct, your resume tells a story about you and it also represents you in front of the Recruiter and Company even before you have come face to face with them. So why not make the representative bit more effective by arming it with some real stories, good appearance, better communication and strong belief that YES I AM ORIGINAL
Being Copied is easy Being Original is much more Easier because you are going to represent YOU and no one else. You have to just be the Real You with your representation in the resume rather than copying or pasting or even getting inspired from someone else's resume
As an HR professional and a Confidence Coach I have never seen a Resume and said ooh wow this is the Perfect Resume. Because Perfection is Fake. Yes Perfection is absolutely FAKE nothing in this whole world is perfect not even the best of the things which you admire as perfect. Interesting, Complete, Attention Grabber yes these are something achievable. So lets work and chase these attributes rather than chasing Perfection
What is that we as Recruiters typically look in a Resume and i am pretty much sure this is what the Recruiters over the entire world too would look at because apart from these there is no other think that you can seek from a Resume.
Let Your Resume do the Story-Telling in 7 Simple Steps
- Keep It Simple - I know we all like to be Shakespeare of our genre and say things which mesmerizes out others however HR person is not a translator of the language. For them sitting with a dictionary related to your subject and industry is the last thing they would want. Hence your Resume is Eliminated. There are piles of downloaded resumes in front of HR executive and they need to shortlist the best 10--15 resumes and hand over to the Hiring Manager. They have only 9sec to do that and if your resume is Tough to read rejection at every level is obvious. So KEEP IT SIMPLE
- Keep it Codes Free - No Jargons - Every industry, every company, every job role has their own lingo or short forms in which they talk. As an HR person it is not necessary they know all the codes an lingo and jargons, so keep your jargons to minimum or best use full forms instead of the short forms. Again the 9sec rule is applied here too.
- Start with a Bang - You have only 9 sec to grab my attention so the nest strategy is to give me your elevator pitch in the first few lines of your resume itself. (today you can skip writing the objective section in your resume however replace that with a short Synopsis). Thus should only highlight your one great thing about you which is the much needed thing in the Job Posting that you are applying for. Read the Job Description so well that you can relate to your current achievement and skill and add it. It should not be more than 3-4 lines at maxxxxx.
- ATS and HSS - Today you have to clear the ATS (Application Tracking System) and the HSS (Human Shortlisting System) before you are able to make it on the Hiring Manager Desk. You need to achieve an 8 and above in the ATS and reach the HSS system for a human review requires you to be smart and intelligent like the computer. Use the buzzwords which are their in the Job Description because that is what will catch the machine algorithm and human algorithm. That is what the company is looking for. Tell you story in a way they want to listen too. Use action words like achieved, delivered, managed, etc..... and with a solid backing of number and data. Become the SEO (Search Engine Optimizer) of your Resume.
- Don't be a Language Fool - If you falter here then no chance your resume ever gets read anywhere. Keep a strong detailed eye on what you are writing and how you are writing. Sweat the small stuff, not a single spelling or a language mistake. This adds your to your impression on the recruiter and mind it this goes a long way
- ECHO the Job Description Mindfully - Since its good to echo the job description however dont just do a cut copy and paste. You are telling a story through your resume so try and weave it in your experience, achievements and skills in such a way that it looks like the part of the screenplay not an added string in the story. As you dont serve the same menu to all your guests similarly the same resume is not served to all job openings. Tweak it to make it the best fit for that requirement and you are called for the interview
- Stand Out - Don't Get OUT - Be Unique and Original however dont be so unique that you become alien to the HR personnel. Use stories and achievements which are real and you have been able to achieve it. Don't tell unrealistic achievements which can be achieved in your industry. You have to stand out based on what you have to offer to the company, what values will you bring in this job role, it is about the you and not the company. If you try too hard to be unique and different it reveals some experience gap. Be Honest about what you have achieved as a person in that role.
At the end it is about who grabs the eye balls of the Recruiter through the strongest marketing tool ever created for a Personal Brand Building - THE RESUME.
