Let me set the record straight on resumes. As someone in the recruiting and career coaching industry for almost 30 years, I have had the opportunity to leaf through the old-school paper versions and scroll through thousands of resumes on the computer. Through my experience, I have realized that many recruiters and career coaches often do a disservice to job seekers who need assistance presenting themselves effectively through a resume. They advise taking off dates and excluding pertinent experiences that preclude job seekers from being interviewed.
The purpose of a resume is to provide potential employers and recruiters with a complete picture of who you are, your skills, experiences, and accomplishments. However, it is not simply about listing your previous job titles and responsibilities. It goes far beyond that. Crafting a compelling resume requires connecting the dots throughout your years of experience, highlighting the key achievements and impactful moments shaping your professional journey. It also involves speaking about time off, career breaks, and leave because, let's face it, life happens. Glaring gaps in resumes make employers suspect you have something to hide.
When it comes to the specific challenges Black talent faces, it is essential to consider not only their professional accomplishments but also the emotional toll they have endured, the untenable work conditions they may have faced, and the invisibility they may have felt in their current or previous roles. Recognizing and addressing these unique aspects is crucial in presenting a comprehensive picture of a candidate's journey.
By doing so, we can help level the playing field and ensure that every individual's talents, expertise, and potential are properly showcased and acknowledged. It is not only a matter of providing tangible results and quantifiable accomplishments; it is also about giving voice and visibility to the struggles and triumphs that have shaped their careers.
