A RESUME FOR JOHN SEBASTIAN AND THE WOW FACTOR
John Sebastian
Consultant for KOAI and Desert Valley Media Group. Creator of The WOW Factor the hottest new-radio format in America.
I realize that in marketing my new music radio format, The Wow Factor, I'm essentially applying for a job. I've been incredibly fortunate to have some of the best mentors in the history of the radio biz. I've worked for and learned from many associates and developed my philosophies on the backs of those that have pioneered the art of programming. Having said that, in consideration of hiring me for my new concept...my resume: I was a #1 rated DJ at two different Top 40 stations in Phoenix.
My first programming experience was KPAM FM in Portland. We were one of the first top 40 FM stations in the country to beat the heritage AM in the market. I programmed KDWB in Minneapolis and won every ratings period during my tenure in a top 40 environment that was one of the most competitive in the nation.with 4 radio stations vying for the same audience. As programmer at KHJ in Los Angeles we had the last great ratings book in that storied station's history. My very first "kick ass rock and roll" station was KUPD in Phoenix. We switched the format from top 40 to AOR and beat the legendary KDKB in our very first book in the new format. Doing the kick ass format on a much bigger stage at WCOZ in Boston we created the most dramatic rock turnaround and the most historic ratings in American rock history annihilating one of the most famous AOR stations ever...WBCN. My consulting company at its peak had 25 rock/AOR clients in just about every major market, LA, New York, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix, Boston, Indianapolis and others, actually more major market stations that any other consultant in that era. I created another new format EOR that helped to inspire the NAC/Smooth Jazz format. I programmed KDKB in Phoenix when it had sunk to the 1 share realm and was on the verge of having to change format. We got it back into the 4 share range. I programmed perhaps the most famous Smooth Jazz station KTWV/The Wave in Los Angeles where our ratings shocked everyone utilizing my unique mix and rising from 13th to 1st in 25-54 Adults. I was the owner, GM and programmer for KLSK in Santa Fe/Albuquerque where we had stunning ratings success despite having a poor signal. I programmed KSLX in Phoenix where we rose from 14th to 1st 25-54. My first country station was a big one in Los Angeles...KZLA. Our cume gained from 425,000 to 732,000 and had the best overall ratings in its history by doing my unique mix of country and country rock...in perhaps the most unfriendly market in the nation for country music. I programmed KISW, a great heritage rock station in Seattle and exploded in the ratings from 18th to 3rd 25-54. Doing my unique form of country we had explosive ratings increases at WLXX in Lexington and WSM-FM/The Wolf in Nashville where we upset the infrastructure of the country music world by rising from the #4 rated country station to #1 25-54 Adults. I also programmed The Wolf in Dallas where we won every ratings period against our direct competitor at the time, KSCS. I programmed WWQM in Madison Wisconsin and had the highest shares in their history when faced with a direct competitor. I have a long history of dominating ratings with the Baby Boomer generation. Now I've created a radio format exclusively for them, in an era where radio has abandoned them. It's time, my friends, way past time. I'm ready to create history once again.
