Resume

Everyday I review countless resumes. There are good resumes and then there are resumes that needs a lot of work. Yesterday I reviewed a resume where there was no phone number. Mistakes like this can be costly.

It is essential that we create a good resume to make a positive impression on potential employers. Here are some tips to help you craft an effective resume:

  1. Choose the Right Resume Format:There are several resume formats to choose from, including chronological, functional, and combination (or hybrid). Select the format that best highlights your strengths and experiences.
  2. Contact Information:Include your name, phone number, email address, and LinkedIn profile (if applicable) at the top of the resume.
  3. Objective or Summary (Optional):A brief statement that summarizes your career goals or highlights your key qualifications can be included at the beginning.
  4. Professional Summary (Recommended):A summary section highlighting your key skills, accomplishments, and qualifications can grab the recruiter's attention.
  5. Work Experience:List your work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent job first).Include the name of the company, job title, dates of employment, and a description of your key responsibilities and accomplishments. Use action verbs and quantify your achievements with specific numbers when possible.
  6. Education:List your educational qualifications, including the name of the institution, degree earned, graduation date, and any relevant academic honors or awards.
  7. Skills:Create a separate section to highlight your skills, both technical and soft skills. Be specific and relevant to the job you're applying for.
  8. Certifications, Licenses, and Training:Include any relevant certifications or training programs you've completed.
  9. Awards and Achievements:Mention any relevant awards, honors, or recognitions you've received.
  10. Volunteer Work and Extracurricular Activities (Optional):Include volunteer work or extracurricular activities that are relevant to the job or demonstrate your skills and character.
  11. Tailor Your Resume:Customize your resume for each job application. Highlight the skills and experiences that align with the specific job requirements.
  12. Use Keywords:Incorporate keywords from the job description to make your resume more likely to pass through applicant tracking systems (ATS).
  13. Keep It Concise:Aim for a one-page resume for less experienced candidates and a maximum of two pages for those with extensive experience.
  14. Proofread:Check your resume for grammar and spelling errors. Consider having someone else review it as well.
  15. Use a Clean and Professional Design:Use a clean, easy-to-read font and a consistent formatting style. Avoid using too many colors or elaborate designs.
  16. Include a Professional Headshot (Optional):Depending on the industry and country, you may choose to include a professional photo, but it's not always necessary.
  17. Provide Contactable References:If required, include references or indicate that they are available upon request.
  18. Save in a Common Format:Save your resume as a PDF to ensure that it retains its formatting across different devices and operating systems.
  19. Be Honest:Always be truthful on your resume. Exaggerating or providing false information can lead to problems if discovered.
  20. Update Regularly:Keep your resume up to date, adding new accomplishments and experiences as they occur.

Remember that your resume is your first opportunity to make a strong impression on potential employers. Tailor it to the specific job you're applying for, and focus on presenting yourself as a well-qualified and enthusiastic candidate.
