Restoring "Recent Folders" feature in Windows 10

Restoring "Recent Folders" feature in Windows 10

I have Windows 10 installed on two machines, one Surface Pro 3, and the other a 6 year old desktop; in both cases it very happily and easily displaced the dreaded Windows 8. Installation failed on a 5 year old high end HP laptop running Windows 7. So I'll leave that as is, as Win 7 works just fine.

I have one small but significant annoyance to report: the default "Quick Access" loses a feature I use multiple times per hour on Win 7 and 8: "Recent folders", which provides a list of *directories* (not files) that have been accessed recently. With a complex directory structure, having quick access to places that are 8-10 clicks down a hierarchy makes things much faster. Some folders are not "frequently used" so they don't show up in the Win 10 list of the same.

THANKFULLY, this simple feature can be easily restored. Why it has to be restored is subject of another conversation. All you have to do is to click right on "Recent folders" (found in C:\users\yourname\links) and select "pin to quick access" and you're done.

I've installed Win10 on my Lenovo Carbon X1 Laptop and love it... EXCEPT that icloud doesn't work correctly in that the photos sync causes problems. Once that is fixed, I'll move all my devices to Win 10 without hesitation. It's faster, more intuitive, and the new features are needed.

I installed Win 10 on my old Dell laptop. At first I was impressed, then disappointed - my OEM product key wasn't recognized as valid, so the OS wasn't as free as I'd been led to believe. Then Notepad was missing - there in the app store, but only via yet another cloud ID. My laptop's running Ubuntu now. Still honeymooning, but I'm happy so far.

David, is kinda odd to be discussing how to get features back that were there 5 years ago... I have not investigated beyond this one.

Good tip, thanks Will. This is something I would certainly use. I only have Win10 on a test machine so far, but I'll probably make the switch on my work systems fairly soon. There are things like this that I really loved about Win 7 that still aren't as good with the new Win10 Start Menu (such as programs in Start that cascade to the side to show recent used files within that program). Maybe there's a workaround for that as well?
