Restoring Eye Sight: Step by Step

Restoring Eye Sight: Step by Step

Dr. Choton Basu, Combat Blindness International (CBI) board member, recently visited Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital SCEH) in Delhi, India, a specialty hospital, and a center of eye care excellence.

In his own words, this Wisconsin to Daryaganj journey to SCEH was as much an internal journey as an external one for him. For him it was life-changing.

The visit deepened Dr. Basu's commitment to social impact and inspired him to dedicate himself even more to our partnership with SCEH and our Aadya Initiative.

CBI's partnership with SCEH goes back many decades. Initially, CBI supported cataract surgeries and building a surgical center at SCEH, but our partnership has grown and evolved over time.?In 2014, CBI began supporting the Certified Ophthalmic Paramedic Program (COP) which trains and employs young women.?Today, we are collaborating to bring eye care to the doorsteps of rural communities via the Aadya Initiative.

The socioeconomic impact and outcome of the?COPS program?are immense.?

The next stage is all about innovation. Programs such as the?Aadya Initiative?uses a sustainable business model and technology to provide eye care to those who have little to no access to eye care.

Through the Aadya Initiative, we will concentrate on process innovation, and business model innovation, and go beyond anything we have ever worked on to meet the UN sustainable development goals.?But the ultimate goal is to ensure quality, equitable eye care to those who need it, to ensure eyecare for everyone.

In partnership with SCEH, we will continue to live the change we dream of.?

We invite you to join us.

There are moments in life that completely change the trajectory of one's life. My students and I have been working with Combat Blindness International for several years but Covid forced all of us to work harder. Reena Chandra Rajpal and Umang Mathur were super supportive and during this trip, I started to clearly see the impact our projects were having. That is ONE of the unique things about the fight against preventable blindness - you can literally see the results. In fact even socio-economic impacts and results. Yes, this trip completely changed me. The sense of clarity I feel now motivates me every day and the incredible bonus is I get to work with some of the "coolest" people - too many to list here.

This trip to SCEH was such an eye-opener. That such a centre of excellence exists in another corner of my city came as a heartwarming surprise. Thanks, Choton Basu for giving me the opportunity to meet the amazing team at SCEH. Excited to be associated with this team and be a part of their vision for the future.
