Restorative Reminder - 2/24/2021
Today's Restorative Reminder is from a training where I expound upon the plight of students who have been identified with a learning disability in schools. A learning disability is the one disability that many people struggle to empathize or sympathize with because it's not instantly identifiable. When someone has a broken leg, no one expects them to walk because it's clear that their ability to walk normally isn't realistic. But if a student has a learning disability, people treat these students as if they are choosing not to learn. I'll be the first to acknowledge that some students with learning disabilities don't put forth their best effort towards working to overcome their disability. But we also have to acknowledge that overcoming a disability, particularly a learning disability, is an obstacle that many of us don't understand. We may not be able to truly develop an understanding of their disability but we always have the opportunity to understand the individualized challenges and needs of each student with a learning disability.
