It's crucial for us, as educators, to prioritize sensory rest.
I have to admit, sensory rest used to be the most neglected area of rest for me until a few months ago. Once I understood its significance, everything started to make sense.?
There was this one time in my twenties when my husband took me out for a date night, and instead of being excited, it felt overwhelming. Strobe lights flashing, deafening music blaring, and a sea of people everywhere made me increasingly agitated within minutes. I had to ask my husband to take me home, feeling guilty for shortening our date night. Little did I know I was experiencing sensory overload and desperately needed sensory rest.?
Looking back, I've always had sensory preferences.
As a child, I pluck mint leaves from the tree to revel in their invigorating scent. Mint tea has become a staple, providing a refreshing sensory experience. The strong aroma of curry takes me right back to my grandfather's house, creating a comforting sense of home. Bright and vibrant colors have always captivated me, offering solace and delight in their brilliance. They play a significant role in my sensory rest routine. And then there is the sensation of running my hands across smooth fur, whether petting my dogs or snuggling up with a fuzzy blanket. It's pure bliss. These personal sensory preferences bring me immense joy and provide the sensory rest my body and mind crave.?
It's crucial for us, as educators, to prioritize sensory rest.
Turning to nature can be incredibly soothing when we need to release ourselves from overstimulation. Sitting outside, basking in the sun's warmth, and listening to the gentle sounds of birds chirping or raindrops can help us relieve sensory stress and find peace.
