The Restaurant Situation

When everybody splits the bill at the restaurant, which one are you?

??The One Who Purposely Ordered Meagerly, but Doesn’t Want to Appear Poor so Says Nothing

??The One Who Believes it Will All Balance Out in the Long Run

??The One Who Wants Points on her Costco Reward Credit Card so Collects Everyone’s Cash

??The One Who Still Doesn’t Use Venmo

??The One Who Outdrank Everyone?

??The One Who Knows They Ordered More and says Graciously: “Are You Sure?” and “We’ll Pay it Forward” and “Let me Get the Tip”

??The One Who’s Oblivious to Other People Not Having Enough Money

??The One With the Calculator in Her Purse

We’ve all probably played EVERY role at some point in our life.

But the point here is that money is such a TABOO topic.

And so we ALL just make assumptions about others financial situations….

And sit in some denial about our own……

We talk about body parts, periods and our kids going through puberty, but we don’t like to talk about money.

Shhhhhhhh!?

Why does money make us such incredibly passive communicators?

Which personality irritates you the most?

Another one to add: The person who hates wasting a minute while everyone is figuring it out so she just foots the bill OR when the payments come up short, just compensates for what is missing. That would be me. While this might appear to be just "generosity"-motivated, it also has to do with my own discomfort with others' discomfort or hesitation while they deal with money.

Another one to add, the one who pays the bill and sends a spreadsheet the next day with the amount you owe. Yikes!

I love this! Carol Parrish, RICP? I think usually I have been "??The One Who Purposely Ordered Meagerly, but Doesn’t Want to Appear Poor so Says Nothing" - but as I do better with business and can be more generous, I want to pay it forward and not worry too much. But I get it. When you're on a budget, I get those ppl!

I am thankful to have a bunch of "it will all sort out in the long run" folks around, but reading the list, it's hard not to chuckle about a situation or two for each. Fun exploration on talking about money, Carol Parrish, RICP?

I love how you took this one example of a common social interaction and broke it down into all the roles we might fall into. You make a great point about how the taboos around money can lead to resentment, cluelessness, etc.
