In terms of design, the major difference between a Restaurant and a Cafe is Space and Application. Cafes usually rely on a smaller multi-functional counter for operation as opposed to a Restaurant which has the Capacity to house a full Kitchen with separate Serveries.
In terms of designing a cafe, the focus is on the design of the counter, maximising functional space, seating and storage in a tenancy of usually less than approx. 100sqm. any hot food made would be toasted or heated by a sandwich press and salamander grill, or a small display oven of sorts.
Their main focus is usually making coffee. A coffee machine may take up to 30% of the counter space. Allowing access for takeway customers would be ideal in these cases. Certain coffee companies also supply the machine as part of their incentive to sell their coffee. Definitely worth looking into if you are a first time cafe owner.
With the design of Restaurants, it is important work with the chef, in order to find out what equipment is necessary and work on the most efficient layout for cooking an and serving. Then look at what servery services you may need for the wait staff to comfortably use the space.
The atmosphere and lighting in a dining area of both a restaurant and cafe is important, as it forms the first impression and experience for a customer. Creating a comfortable dining Ambience is important, and the use of colours that encourages Thirst and Hunger are also a plus for continuous business.
Ambient rather than direct lighting can create a warm and cosy space. Cushy banquettes and lounges will make customers want to stay longer. Food and drink colours like different shades of greens, yellows, reds and browns, may help promote your customers' appetite as well.
Furthermore, the Smell and Aroma of a restaurant or cafe really determines how cosy and attractive a space will be to diners. This can be achieved by simply placing whole herbs, spices, coffee beans, tea leaves, etc. To lure the senses of your potential customers.
