For the Rest of the World, the U.S. President Has Always Been Above the Law
Americans Will Now Know What a Lack of Accountability Means
Amid the churn of news regarding the U.S. presidential election, the magnitude of the Supreme Court’s decision granting the president criminal immunity for official acts has gotten somewhat overlooked. The ruling is sure to undermine efforts to hold former President Donald Trump accountable for trying to overturn the 2020 election, as well as other criminal charges he faces. It is also set to transform the highest office in the country.
Although the president’s power over national security has increased dramatically over the last several decades, this “decision pushes that dynamic into overdrive,” write Sarah Binder, James Goldgeier, and Elizabeth Saunders. Outside the United States, presidents have long been able to violate the law with impunity—but, as Oona Hathaway notes, “what is so frightening about this decision is that it has the potential to make the president’s actions within the United States just as unchecked as they are outside it.”
And as for the mercy of your Allah [generously shown to you], then tell [about it to others, encourage them and inspire them]! 93:11
8 个月then pir nest - tadbir nest what the reasoning is not clear about - and everything that is happening is not clear. It seems to me that we are too carried away by the competitiveness of elections, although for the rest of the world this method of selection is very useful, who knows there are systems that can do without this. for example, problems, that is, the word “problem” is lost, instead of it the word “topic” is used, which means humanity has but problems, but there are a lot of “topics”, it’s funny though, we are schoolchildren and are waiting for our grades. some to heaven and some... Personally, I remind you of the popular saying: “it is not old - it is not a measure” President Joe Biden

8 个月I’m not mad at the immunity at all. I just would not to find myself following the direct orders of anyone with immunity only to find myself in prison. Besides family, love, good health, a nice sturdy wig/toupee…immunity is a coveted shiny infinity stone. You know, “Tomb Raider” and “Indiana Jones” type stuff. Too bad for the rest of us commoners. I think the closest thing we got to immunity is Masonry, favors, and/or strong connections to powerful names.

8 个月Foreign Affairs Magazine, what are you doing printing this tripe? The opinion is decidedly clear that official acts are immune from prosecution. Personal acts are not. We've known this about statecraft since Westphalia for heaven's sake. ??

8 个月Was a US president ever held accountable for the Native American genocide? For slaveholding and the rape and torture of Africans? For sending 18 & 19 year olds into harm’s way in colonial and imperialist wars? They’ve always been above the law everywhere.
