Responsible Training
The responsibility of delivering a workshop does not end with just imparting knowledge. It must encompass an attempt in making a change to the overall outlook of the people attending the session.
In my own way I always make it a point to stress the importance of being a good corporate citizen in the course of facilitating the session. This line is woven into the fabric of the workshop.
However different workshops require different approaches. This will depend on the subject, the level of the participants and the brief received for the intervention. Many trainers have a standard approach of only having fun with little or no real take away.
The question arises "Is training an education to add value &impart knowledge or is it a edutainment"- appear to be a learning exercise but made frivolous and fun. The sad part is that the feedback forms distributed capture the fun element and the better the score the assumption is that the ROI on the session was worth it.
I have been engaged by a premier institute in the city to run classes. Being a professional course the approach is to facilitate the session professionally. While humour and fun are part of the session there is no unnecessary hooting, clapping and whistling. There are a majority of others whose approach is fun with no concern for other neighbouring classes which are in session.
Its time we start understanding our role seriously. Imparting the right values, respect for fellow students& facilitators, imbibing these in the classes we handle are more important than just fun, high scores and false popularity that we get sucked into.
