As a virtual assistant serving veterans, I’ve encountered all sorts of conversations—some inspiring, some challenging, and some downright surprising. Recently, I had a lighthearted yet profound exchange that reminded me of the importance of sharing positivity and faith in the moments when someone else needs it most.
During a routine conversation, a veteran I was assisting said to me, with a mix of humor and frustration, “Jesus hates me!” His words, while unexpected, came from a place of personal struggle. But instead of being taken aback, I smiled and responded:
“Of course not! Jesus gives you trials to make you patient and stronger! He loves you—always. Keep the faith!”
What followed was a heartfelt moment of connection, encouragement, and reflection that left both of us uplifted.
1. Understanding the Source of the Struggle
When someone says something like "Jesus hates me," it’s often a reflection of the hardships they’re facing. Many veterans, after enduring the challenges of service and the complexities of civilian life, carry emotional and physical burdens that can make them feel forgotten or even forsaken. It’s essential to recognize these feelings without judgment, understanding that they stem from pain, not a lack of faith.
In this veteran’s case, it was clear he was frustrated with the trials he was facing—whether related to his health, benefits, or personal life. And while his words carried a touch of humor, they also hinted at deeper struggles.
2. The Power of a Positive Response
In moments like this, how you respond matters. Instead of dismissing his words or trying to argue, I chose to reply with encouragement, rooted in faith and compassion. My response wasn’t about preaching but about gently reminding him of God’s unwavering love, even in the toughest times.
“Of course not! Jesus loves you,” I said. “The trials you’re facing are not punishments—they’re opportunities to grow stronger and more patient. He’s with you every step of the way.”
That simple reassurance sparked a smile on his face and turned the conversation into something meaningful.

3. Faith as a Source of Strength
Faith can be a powerful anchor for veterans, many of whom have faced unimaginable challenges during their service. But it’s also easy to feel disconnected from that faith during tough times. Moments like this are opportunities to gently remind them of the strength and hope that faith can provide.
Life’s trials are not signs of abandonment; they’re opportunities to grow, persevere, and emerge stronger. As I shared this perspective with the veteran, I could see his mood shift, and he began to reflect on his journey with a bit more optimism.
4. The Importance of Compassion in Service
Serving veterans isn’t just about helping them navigate paperwork or benefits; it’s about connecting with them on a human level. Moments like this remind me why empathy and compassion are essential in what I do. Sometimes, it’s not about solving a problem—it’s about being a source of encouragement and positivity in someone’s day.
For this veteran, a little humor and a lot of reassurance went a long way in lifting his spirits. And for me, it was a reminder of the profound impact we can have simply by choosing kindness and understanding.
5. Keeping the Faith
We all face moments of doubt and frustration, but faith reminds us that we’re never alone. For the veteran who thought Jesus hated him, a simple conversation helped shift his perspective, reminding him of God’s love and purpose in his life. It was a reminder for both of us to keep the faith, no matter what challenges come our way.
Final Thoughts: Sharing Light in Dark Moments
This interaction left me feeling both humbled and inspired. It’s a reminder that, even in professional roles, we have the opportunity to share hope and positivity. Whether it’s through a kind word, a listening ear, or a gentle reminder of faith, we can make a difference.
To the veterans and anyone else feeling overwhelmed by life’s trials: Remember, you are loved, valued, and never alone. Keep the faith—you are stronger than you know, and brighter days are ahead. ???
