The holiday season can be especially challenging for many veterans, often triggering memories of trauma, loss, and feelings of isolation. As we celebrate, it’s vital to consider the unique experiences of those who have served.
Instead of asking if they are alone during the holidays, focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere. Extend an invitation to join family gatherings or community events, which can help combat feelings of isolation. Acknowledge their service with gratitude, but avoid probing questions about their military experiences, as these can bring back painful memories.
Research shows that veterans are at a higher risk for depression and anxiety, particularly during this time. By fostering an environment of respect and understanding, we can help veterans feel valued and connected. Let's ensure they know they are appreciated and not forgotten this holiday season.
