Veterans Day 2024
A rainy day in New York City
cold steel barriers mark the parade route — control.
The rain keeps a quiet cadence, the city breathes in and out, a steady rhythm.
Thousands will line the streets to watch heroes pass, a reminder of that fragile balance between safekeeping and freedom.
Yet our world is on fire, people are starving, suffering, hungry, hurt.
Betrayed by violence and war, fighting for their lives and culture.
Behind the curtain, countless men and women give their lives, their days and nights, to defend us and our values.
These are neighbors, friends, colleagues. Respect for shared beliefs keeps them from turning, from breaking faith with their own.
But what values? Who decides?
What force is necessary?
Despite my questions — or maybe because I can even ask them — I am grateful.
