Respect for People - A core value at HP

One of the most powerful lessons any of us were privileged to learn, at Hewlett-Packard in the 80s and 90s, was innate “respect for people at all times”. This principle was deeply embedded in the company’s culture, shaping how we learned, led, and handled challenging situations.

At HP, this was not just about treating people with respect and kindness, but also creating a culture where employees learned how to pursue high-impact innovations, grow revenue, and handle business slowdowns while maintaining a great work culture.

Every company goes through prosperous and challenging times - that’s a normal enterprise life cycle. Whenever a company maintains respect for people, employees go out of their way to innovate, collaborate, and take risks for the necessary pivotal breakthroughs. When employees feel respected - they exhibit tremendous ownership and loyalty to the company's well-being. They make all the required sacrifices to ensure the long-term success of the company.

One positive side-effect of this core value is - an amiable and low-stress work environment with open communications while still pushing hard for business success no matter how tough the business situation is. In HP, the pride of being an HP employee was deep and wide across the ranks, irrespective of your title or pay grade.

As you build teams and companies in this new era of AI, use this foundational core value of “respect for people at all times”. You can count on this foundational value - it will help your company succeed.?

I would love your thoughts and comments.?

Looking back on my life experiences, I notice three recurring patterns where disrespect tends to emerge in people: 1. When the arrogance of success (small or big) creeps in, people start viewing others as inferior. 2. When someone holds authority but lacks self-control, they tend to mistreat others. 3. At the end of a relationship, people often stop caring about how they treat the other party, as they no longer see any future benefit. Thanks, Atul Bhatnagar for highlighting this core value, which is very dear to me.

I agree, and fully aligned. In addition to Respect, Employee engagement and inclusion is also key where employees feel empowered to share ideas and take ownership of their work. This then extends to create a good sense of collaboration at the workplace. It encourages cross-functional teamwork to stimulate diverse perspectives and creative solutions. Creates a sense of belonging.

I've found that one of the greatest ways to demonstrate "respect for people" is to simply allow them the freedom to use their brains and exercise their own common sense and good judgment. Respect for people = respect for their minds.
