I got annoyed AND inspired by some conversations I had if we can do LEGO? SERIOUS PLAY? online. It compelled me to write my rather unpopular opinion :
Yes, we can do most methods and frameworks online.
As long as we respect and uphold the values, the principles and the goals of those methods and frameworks!
We need to dare to be honest with ourselves and we need to ask ourselves when we think of work arounds or taking shortcuts, do they keep our audience in flow? Do they still serve the values, the principles and goals of these methods or frameworks? Do you still achieve the most optimal result by doing so?
If not than it’s still fine to do them. Really. Just don’t call them that method or framework.
If we take bits and pieces from LEGO? SERIOUS PLAY? for instance, if we leave things out, if we shorten the skills building, if we have to customise LSP in such a way that it’s hard to respect its values, its principles or its goals (like the ?? - ??) then it’s no longer True LEGO? SERIOUS PLAY?, it is no longer LSP. We will no longer achieve the most optimal results. Respect the method.
If we take bits and pieces from Scrum for instance, if we don’t respect the framework or the process, or we make it a company Scrum version, it’s still ok.
Just don’t call it Scrum. You might be agile but don’t call it Scrum.
By doing Scrum BUT... That's how Scrum gets a bad name. So, don't be surprised that Scrum doesn't live up to our high expectations then. Respect the framework!
If we take bits and pieces from #Sprint or #designsprint, if we don’t respect the process, if we want to do the method in shorter time than it becomes a workshop. Call it a workshop and not a (Design) Sprint.
Respect the method.
Every method, every framework has its purpose.
- LEGO? SERIOUS PLAY? : unlock the unknown knowledge to solve the problem
- Scrum: deliver twice the value in half the time to outcompete your market
- (Design) Sprint: Get answers today for any big opportunity or problem
They have been designed with empiric data and they proved over many many years that the best results were achieved by respecting the method or framework as they are designed.
I would like to end with some movie wisdom:
So, the problem is not LEGO? SERIOUS PLAY? or Scrum or (Design) Sprint,
the problem is your attitude about LEGO? SERIOUS PLAY?, Scrum or (Design) Sprint. ??
Just call the things for what they are. Respect the methods, respect the frameworks as they are. And most importantly use the methods and frameworks correctly!
Thank you for reading my humble unpopular opinion. And you are, of course, entitled to totally disagree with me. ??
Take care and stay safe ??

4 年Hi Marc. So agree with you. In changing times we all have to change. And one of the key things to change is attitude. I think we have to take what is good and see how it applies to a new world and move on. Thanks for sharing your viewpoint. It does get one thinking!
