Respect, Leadership & Parenting

"The Integral Connection Between Parenting, Leadership, and Values"

The pivotal leadership role that adults undertake is often that of a parent, marking the foundational beginning of leadership itself. It is crucial to approach this subject with an open mind, a heart driven by possibilities, and the patience and opportunity befitting royalty.

Parenting and leadership share numerous ingredients, acknowledging that there is no one-size-fits-all approach for either role. Neither comes with a manual, and confidence doesn't consistently permeate every moment of these journeys, and for good reason.

Here are three reasons, and you may have more based on personal experience:

  1. Relying on a manual or a specific style repeatedly can lead to stagnation and individual boredom, resulting in mere replicas of that particular style.
  2. Individualism is essential for evolution, as without it, there can be no beneficial changes.
  3. Lack of evolution implies a lack of change, a notion worth pondering.

To enhance the sustainability of these roles, the answer lies in a simple yet powerful concept: Values.

Starting with shared values creates a common ground, establishing a sturdy foundation for a unique inner compass to navigate life, leadership, and the development of a robust self-belief.

Further emphasizing this, three values form the cradle of human-centric leadership, fostering trust and confidence:

  1. Respect: Self-respect is self-care, a cornerstone of wellness. By respecting oneself, individuals can honor their intrinsic worth and recognize mutual respect in others.
  2. Loyalty: Loyalty to others fosters longevity in relationships, both personal and professional. A critical self-questioning moment arises: Am I loyal to myself, acknowledging the commitment necessary for enduring connections?
  3. Honesty: While self-doubt can undermine confidence, honesty is an integral aspect of being human. By being honest with oneself, confidence grows. It involves introspection and questioning: Am I okay? Am I good enough? Honest self-appraisal leads to positive self-talk and areas for improvement.

As unique individuals with distinct values, evolving lives, and personal styles of connection and communication, respecting these differences becomes paramount. We owe it to ourselves to first respect the self and then extend that respect outwardly. This journey involves relearning how to think, successfully connecting, and communicating for the ultimate mindset – true leadership that starts with the self. Have you considered redefining a new journey ?

If there's one really tough lesson I've learned from parenting, it's being authentically vulnerable. This applies to leadership too. I've had to learn to be real - honest about not having all the answers - and willing to listen & connect from the heart. I've learned some of the toughest life lessons from my ADHD daughter - essential to leadership. Just because our brains are wired differently, it doesn't make anyone of less value. A more inclusive approach gives everyone a platform for their voice to be heard. There's a place for everyone, as long as they feel their contribution is valued. My note to self: make time this year to stop & listen, include everyone & connect from the heart.
