Resource Round-up for Literacy Leaders: An MTSS cheat sheet, a binge-able podcast, and more!

How is back-to-school going for you? Some of our district partners are gearing up for the first days of school while others are already in full swing with students. Wherever you are in the back-to-school season, we hope that everything goes off without a hitch and that you find some time for your own literary pursuits amidst this busy time.

To that end, we’re presenting a round-up of the most interesting links, articles, and more that our team has been exploring when it comes to the science of reading:

What We're Reading:

  • A Speech-to-Print approach to teaching reading? This article by Dr. Jan Wasowicz in an issue of the?LDA Bulletin explains the speech-to-print approach to teaching reading. As Dr. Wasowicz writes, “Student outcomes in reading and writing can be maximized by an approach to instruction that leverages the organization of the brain for oral language by emphasizing phoneme-to-grapheme orthographic mapping, simultaneous activation and integration of all language systems and modalities, and procedural and statistical learning.”
  • Does multisensory instruction live up to the hype??This article feels like a hot button, and we would love to know your thoughts! It explores macro- and micro-level multisensory methods and which techniques are research-based.

What We're Listening To:

  • Knowledge Matters, a podcast hosted by Natalie Wexler. Season 1 is all about reading comprehension, digging into big questions about test score disparities across socioeconomic status, the return on investment in educational reform, and more. (P.S. - If you haven't read her book of the same name, we highly recommend that, as well!)

What We're Lesson Planning With:

  • This?MTSS guide?by Branching Minds was?created by teachers, for teachers, and is a great tool kit for making core instruction impactful for all students.
  • This SPELL-Links?Interactive Phoneme Pronunciation Chart?is so fun! How would you use this with students?
