The Importance of Inclusion in the Workplace

The globe is shrinking! Working in an internationally branded company has in more then one way - expanded my horizons! (Pun intended)

In today’s diverse and interconnected world, creating an inclusive workplace is not just a moral imperative but a business necessity. Inclusion in the workplace means fostering an environment where every employee feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute to their fullest potential. When companies prioritize inclusion, they reap numerous benefits, including increased employee engagement, innovation, and overall productivity.

Why Inclusion Matters

  1. Enhanced Innovation: Diverse teams bring a variety of perspectives, leading to more creative solutions and innovative ideas. An inclusive environment encourages the free exchange of these ideas, fostering a culture of creativity and problem-solving.
  2. Improved Employee Engagement and Retention: Employees who feel included are more likely to be engaged and committed to their work. They are also more likely to stay with the company, reducing turnover rates and associated costs.
  3. Better Decision Making: Inclusive teams are better equipped to make decisions as they consider a wider range of perspectives and avoid groupthink. This leads to more robust and well-rounded outcomes.
  4. Positive Company Reputation: Companies known for their inclusive practices attract top talent and build strong, loyal customer bases. A reputation for inclusion can be a significant competitive advantage.

Action Items! 2 Practical Ways to Implement Inclusion Today

  1. Implement Inclusive Hiring Practices: To build an inclusive workplace, start with the hiring process. Ensure job postings use inclusive language and reach diverse candidate pools. During interviews, use standardized questions to reduce bias and consider diverse hiring panels.
  2. Foster an Inclusive Culture through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): ERGs are voluntary, employee-led groups that focus on shared characteristics or life experiences, such as gender, race, or interests. These groups provide support, enhance career development, and contribute to personal development in the workplace.

Embracing inclusion is not just the right thing to do; it is a strategic business decision that drives innovation, engagement, and success.

I would love to hear from YOU! What are ways that you are fostering inclusion with your teams and workplaces?

Inclusion is also good for the bottom line of a company as the innovation, engagement, and success promote efficiency, happiness, and, in turn, higher profits! Investments in inclusion usually deliver a great ROI and, are therefore, not costs but actual investments!
