Resort design and the importance of preserving cultural assets (without necessarily reproducing its environments).
No other development typology will be luckier than resorts. They are set, at beautiful, invigorating, unforgettable places.
One might think that this makes life easy when it comes to trace the framework, but is not always like that. In fact, is usually painful to deal with environmental or heritage sensitive sites, as they always are, sometimes both at once.
We have recently developed a master plan for a sloped site along the Mediterranean Sea. The location offered a variety of views to natural landscape. Local buildings regulations, however, were based on the idea of reproducing a specific typology and character from a specific time.
Throughout the design process, we have focused on preservation of the site, with a more flexible building placement. At the end of the day, not being restrictive worked in favor of the preservation, and an appropriate balance between cultural and environmental conservation was found.
