The first day of a new year has a few distinct traits: a new dawn, a new beginning, a new hope and a list of new resolutions, atleast for people like me, a list of things that have been drowned in self procrastination and come afloat on the first day of the new year.
So, here I was, all excited on the eve of the year as I decided to enlist my resolutions for the new year and it seemed that the list became endless, perhaps, there are far too many things that I need to work upon that I have prolonged for long.
Amongst the firsts, it was to be a healthier version of me and I decided to go for an early morning walk. While getting up early has been a regular routine for me, getting out of bed has been a completely different task altogether. And I had convinced myself of the number of reasons that contributed behind the delay for me to get out of bed; at home, the ambience works like a sedative that provides tranquil to all the anxieties. I am much at peace emotionally in my abode than anyother place and it serves as a good reason for not being out of bed. However, the resolution demanded me to shrug off these platonic facts that have been constraints in disguise.
It was a bit cloudy and it seemed that the sun rays were equally determined like me to cut across the thick blanket of fog and transform into the new dawn. Half asleep and fully determined to live upto my resolution, I took the first step towards the journey of almost a mile before I reached the gate of my building. I saw the building guard, an old man nestled in a blanket trying to cover up the maximum of his body to protect from the biting cold. As soon as he saw me, he smiled and greeted.
“Happy New Year, Sir.” he said with utmost warmth in his voice.
The warmth in his voice froze my motion as I took a pause to have a brief conversation.
“Hopefully, good times will prevail in this new year.” I said that was more of a clichéd statement to initiate the conversation.
“Saheb, hopefully, yes, with the grace of almighty.” He replied though it seemed that his reply did not align with his glacial expression that matched the weather of the morning.
“Do you not agree that good times will prevail, babuji?” I asked as I could sense something amiss.
“Saheb, please do not misunderstand me. I don’t remember my age but I know that I have lived for long to experience a few things and I have realized one thing over these many years.” He said as his expression became more emotive.
I continued to wait for his conclusion.
“The times don’t change, the people change. If we change for better then the times change for better and if we don’t then things also remain the same. God helps those who help themselves. One should not wait for the time to change because it will never change. One needs to act to ensure that time changes due to the act.” He concluded with a smile.
The lesson of wisdom was far more luminous and radiant than the rays that stuck the surface. A profound thought as I got the answer to the question related to the success of my resolutions: I need to change and act. Happy New Year!:)
