Resolve to Protect Against Cyber Crime in 2023

I know you were attacked by cyber criminals in 2022 and I know you will be attacked by cyber criminals in 2023.

I do not need to know you or your business to make this statement and I don’t have supernatural abilities. What I do have is information that shows everyone has been and will be attacked by cyber criminals. Fake emails, fake texts and online traps have become so common that they are now part of the background noise of our everyday lives. How many Nigerian princes could there possibly be?? We expect the scams. We think we can spot them. We may even think less of people who get scammed, asking, "How could someone fall for that?"

The simple truth is that criminals are always at work looking for poorly secured systems and new ways to get around our defenses. All those nuisance attacks that we easily deflect build up a false sense of confidence, which gives opportunity to the creative criminals out to do us real harm.

To put you on the best possible footing for the coming year, our main story covers the Essential New Year’s Resolutions for Cyber Security everyone should be making. It contains some simple things you can do on your own right now, as well as some more involved steps you should take if you handle sensitive data. You will find at least one resolution that you want to follow, as well as some excellent ideas to secure your operations.

BREAKING: Customers Are Asking Questions About Business Cyber Security

The Register reports a surprising statistic: Of 1,175 security and business leaders surveyed, 91% said that customers have been asking if they meet "specific security requirements." Business partners asked about security at 85% of the businesses polled by Dimensional Research on behalf of LogRhythm.

Some of this activity was expected amid a rising need for compliance and documentation, but the number of customers looking at cyber security is far above expectations. If customers value security, then security becomes a competitive factor. From the sales process through the ongoing relationship, businesses that put a priority on proven, documented cyber security will have an advantage over those that do not.

Stat of the Month: 227

The average number of days it took U.S. businesses to identify and contain a data breach, according to the IBM Cost of a Data Breach 2022 report. Businesses that were able to identify and contain a breach in less than 200 days saved an average of $1.2 million.

U.S. businesses fared even worse when it came to compromised credentials, which the report identified as the most common cause of data breaches. Credential theft took an average of 327 days to identify and address.

Make Your Cyber Security Training Stick

We had a great response to our recent online seminar, Increase the Effectiveness of Security Awareness Training by Making It Personal. Good news for those who could not attend: We have now made a version of it available free on our website.

We have cracked the code on training that generates real cultural change in organizations and proven the results with our clients. The seminar is available for free for a limited time, with no information required to access it. Don't miss this chance to learn how to make your security awareness training more impactful and meaningful for your employees.

Company Party? Holiday Getaway? Your Devices Are Not Invited

Leave your work devices in the office before you head out for a company party or travel this holiday season, as they are a ripe target for thieves and cyber criminals. The University of Pittsburgh reports that 1 in 10 laptops will be stolen, and 98% will never be recovered. If the laptop that gets left in the back seat of a cab or disappears from a coatroom contains customer data or login credentials, it must be treated as a data breach, which can lead to expensive containment measures and time-consuming compliance reporting.

Your device will not have a good time at the gathering, and you will have a better time if you’re not worrying about it. Find additional tips on ways to protect your office and home from cyber attacks during the holidays in ‘Tis the Season to Be Mindful.
