Resolutions are dead. Long live resolution.
Regarding New Year Resolutions. I know they're these days often not a particularly groovy notion but there may be another slant on this. I like the idea of actually resolving things, rather than just committing to some kind of internal promise.
Listen to the radio
There's a great wee programme on the radio called The Listening Service and Tom Service, the presenter, most recently presented "Resolutions".
And it made me think that, rather than having New Year's Resolutions, why not actually resolve something in the New Year? That's to say, why not complete something with some satisfaction. It's not so much resolving to give up something or start doing something, it's more about bringing something to a satisfactory or maybe even exciting conclusion.
Someone today suggested his own resolution - "consistency". I can equate with that. Consistency is something I can struggle with. I tend to be better at dealing with things as they arise, rather than planning and building up a regime of consistent activities. Resolving my battle with consistency could serve me very well.
Resolutions Schmesolutions
Now you could say that New Year Resolutions (as we know them typically) and my interpretation thereof aren't exactly that different in terms of outcome - I might want to commit to being more consistent rather than resolve my lack of it. And you'd most likely be right.
The way I see it, though, is through a different lens.
Seeking a resolution to something seems more defined and complete somehow than just resolving to do something.
Anyway, we'll see how that goes, won't we? ??
I wish you all a resolutely resolving 2024.
