Resolutions for 2016

Resolutions for 2016

Did you make resolutions about things you want to do in 2016? I did. You can see some of them here in the graphic. Before I talk about my resolutions for 2016, let me first share what I wanted to do last year ie in 2015.

  1. I wanted to run a non-experts conference where speakers would be not experts but novices who would share their hacks about building expertise. I did run one at work. It was terrific to see how people taught themselves complex tasks using learning hacks. Ideas ranged from learning through YouTube videos or simply watching someone at work.
  2. Another resolution was to increase my learning metabolism by learning to code. I made a start and then wobbled. It was not for want of support that I did not do it. I gave up too soon. I did try to build my learning metabolism by learning to draw sketchnotes. Visual thinking helps me learn stuff much faster.
  3. I had resolved to complete my next work of fiction in 2015. I wrote a chapter in an anthology on Satyajit Ray's famous creation - Feluda. Satyajit Ray wrote the first Feluda story in 1965. So when Boria Majumdar asked me to write a chapter in an anthology celebrating Feluda @50, I was thrilled. Here is the book at the Harper Collins stall at the World Book Fair, New Delhi.

What about my resolutions for 2016?

Innovation Resolutions

Prof Bill Fischer (@bill_fischer) compiles a set of innovation resolutions. He asks a number of his friends about what they plan to do to be more innovative. The result is this fascinating set of ideas that are crowdsourced.

I wondered what I would do differently in 2016 to be innovative. I thought that I should work on my storytelling skills. Here is what I finally told myself I will do.

Innovations that get implemented and go viral are the ones that have stories that capture our imagination. Ideas travel faster when they ride on the wings of stories. This year I want to improve my storytelling skills by doing the following:

a)      Take notes when innovators and entrepreneurs tell their stories

b)      Improve visual storytelling skills by drawing something every day

c)       Listen to podcasts of storytellers, marketeers & screen writers

Beautiful sketchnotes. As a person who believes in the idea of narrative-based learning, every word in your article resonates with me! More power to you. :)
