Resolution Resolve Revolution

We're almost there, we're getting closer to that point in the year when I stop everything, not really that hard since there isn't much happening, at least not much that I have control over. It's time to stop and reflect and look forward. Of course most of you have dealt with me reflecting on things almost every day, all year long. And now, I'm saying that there's going to be a major load of reflecting and commentary and future vision and other such crap. Relax, having read Dave Barry's year in review, I understand that I can't compete there, but really I do take offense when you say I'm verbose and don't say anything about him. My reflections are much shorter than his, but I get a waiver for run-on sentences since I don't have a Pulitzer (except in my dreams). I have however been nominated for the Nobel Prize several times, by the guy that lives behind the Walgreens. He was reasonable and only asked for a bottle of Boone's Farm Blue Hawaiian.

I really don't need to expound on the impact of 2020, since all of my readers have already experienced their own private versions of hell on earth. Realistically, I know that the 1 or 2% that made obscene profits off of the blood and fears of our friends don't read what I say. The upper echelon or our society, the upper crud wasn't impacted and they don't understand why we're having a problem and dying at such a slow rate. But most of my readers are silently enduring the shock and awe of a systemic failure. They are dealing with a battle for which they are unarmed and mostly in the dark, they can't really fight because the only weapon they have is a mask, a hope and a prayer. Or so it seemed, until we came to election day, when most stood up and said “enough”. And in that moment as we all turned out in greater numbers than ever before we saw our neighbors and those who would be friends and even family, we saw them in their true light. And we were reminded of that adage “If someone shows you who they are, believe them”.

We have dealt with evangelicals who violated the 4th commandment, taking the lord's name in vain by by creating a false standard and then worshiping that standard and violating the 2nd commandment.

We have dealt with our elected leaders, all who are sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution decide that it would be easier to take a Sharpie and rewrite it to suit their own purposes.

We have dealt with the concept that it's not a lie if you can get everybody to believe it, and ended up with everyone lying, twisting and shaping truth to justify their own actions and cover their failures.

We have gone backwards to a time when beliefs, tales, half truths, superstition, and the suppression of the population are far more important and believable than the provable facts of science. A time when science and education is the butt of the jokes and pushed aside as an inconvenient nuisance for those who would prefer their own agenda of dominance and suppression.

We have come to the point where many complain that civil rights are violated by wearing a mask to protect others and minimizing social gatherings is an assault on their rights, while at the same time endorsing and supporting Homeland Security's outrageous assault on human rights and dignity.

We have come to a point where we are no longer ruled by elder statesmen, but instead are ruled by old white men who serve their sponsors and their bank accounts and not the people who actually employed them. It is with gratitude and hope that we look upon the new wave coming in. The youth, the squad, the idealists who carry the voice of the people. Not just on the national level but on the local level, where they will have the greatest impact. I look at people like Newell Clark, the Mayor of Lexington NC, Jacob Day the Mayor of Salisbury Md, Emily Keller the Mayor of Hagerstown MD, Shawn Maldon the Mayor of Capital Heights Md or Brandon Paulin the Mayor of Indian Head MD. These fresh new voices are our future.

I started this post with the intent of talking about New Year's resolutions. The problem is that these resolutions are basically lies that we tell ourselves to make ourselves feel good. These lies are the same as saying that the government is here to help us, these resolutions are no better than the deals we have offered the Native Americans, they hold up long enough for us to sober up or they become inconvenient. When it comes to resolutions, I've only ever offered up a few that held true, I would try to do better in the coming year, and I did try. But I think that this year, the most appropriate resolution that we could offer up is one that is as old as our country and tried and true: “We Mutually Pledge To Each Other Our Lives, Our Fortunes And Our Sacred Honor”. These are the words that our founders used as a part of the resolution that they agreed to in order to found our nation. This year as a resolution for the upcoming year, maybe we should all adopt that one.

That resolution being the best for all of us to adopt in support of our neighbors, our friends and family, our community and our country. A resolution that says we're all in this together, and together we will all work to get through this and make this coming New Year a happy and prosperous one for all.
