Reskilling and upskilling the power of developing our talent
A few weeks ago, I shared my thoughts with HRM Asia on key HR trends for 2024, I highlighted the importance of developing exciting and new development opportunities for employees. In a recent Financial Times Working It Podcast the Financial Time’s deputy work and careers editor Bethan Staton suggests that reskilling and developing one’s own careers is the individual's responsibility, but what can orgainsations do to help?
Josh Bersin highlights the importance of growing internal talent, whether that’s by giving new/more responsibilities or investing in enabling them to learn different skills. In theory this sounds simple but how do we as HR professionals encourage our business leaders to have an open mind and challenge their talent. I remember early on in my career the Global Head of Talent was asked by our then CEO to find talent who were not like him, find talent who are different and who are going to challenge the status quo. Years later this mantra has stayed with me and as we continue to face talent shortages across the world. I challenge you to think about growing internal talent and giving them opportunities – even if it’s a stretch why not allow someone to try something different. I encourage you to take a risk on talent, see what happens, be an advocate for change. You never know who you might discover.??
