It can be very tempting to share information, recommend, give unsolicited advice, and even lecture. Still, the problem is that the people we are trying to "help" rarely benefit from this approach.
If you are serious about sharing information, and advice in a meaningful way then you will RESIST THE RIGHTING REFLEX.
What is the Righting Reflex? This is the desire to correct, lecture, educate, and/or share advice that is unsolicited.
Before you dive into giving advice try the following approach.
ASK PERMISSION to share information relevant to the person's situation. Only if they say yes share the relevant information.
Ex. Person you are speaking to is experiencing a challenge you are familiar with and have experience solving. You say, "Is it ok if I share something that helped me when I was in a similar situation?"
Asking before telling is very powerful! Try it. You will find people will be more open and likely to listen with open ears when you ask permission.
Warning if you accidentally start to give advice without permission you can course correct.

STOP - Apologize for giving advice without permission- ASK for permission.
Ex. "I'm sorry you did not ask my advice. Is it ok if I share something that worked for me when I was in a similar situation?".
Take this technique on a test drive and let me know how it goes. I have used this with my teenagers, spouse, family, friends, at work, and in my business. It has worked wonders in all aspects of my life. WARNING it only works when you use it.
I am rooting for your success! Karla
