The Resilient Parent: Nurturing YOU for Family Wellbeing

Hey there amazing parents!

The end of the school year is fast approaching and as we look forward to the summer months, there's often added pressure to keep our kids busy and active. While it's natural to want to fill their days with enriching activities, let's not forget the importance of taking care of ourselves, too. This month, I want to emphasize a critical aspect of parenting: self-care.

Embracing Self-Care as a Priority

First and foremost, self-care is essential. It's important to untangle the belief that taking care of ourselves is somehow indulgent or unnecessary.

In reality, self-care is wired into our DNA.

When we neglect our own needs, we can become resentful and less effective in our roles as parents.

  1. To make time for self-care, we need to build it into our daily routines. Start by thinking about what gives you energy and what drains it. We need to ensure that there's enough energy coming in to recharge our batteries.
  2. Even on the busiest days, think of small self-care activities that can be done in just a couple of minutes—like deep breathing, stretching, or listening to your favorite song.
  3. Build from there and gradually incorporate longer self-care practices into your routine.

Understanding Your DISC Personality for Better Self-Care

Each of us has our own unique way of recharging, influenced by our DISC personality type:

  • Dominant (D): Engage in physical activity or problem-solving tasks to invigorate yourself.
  • Inspiring (I): Social interactions and creative outlets like art or music can be incredibly energizing.
  • Supportive (S): Find peace in nature or quiet moments of reflection to rejuvenate.
  • Cautious (C): Structured routines or diving into a good book might be your ideal way to recharge.

Understanding what truly rejuvenates us is the first step in effective self-care. It's like filling up our own cup so we can pour into our families from a place of abundance.

Setting Boundaries for Balance

Boundaries are like guardrails that keep us balanced and sane. They help us manage our energy and prevent burnout. Here are some tips based on your DISC personality:

  • Dominant (D): Set clear work and personal time boundaries. Allow yourself designated periods for relaxation and family activities.
  • Inspiring (I): Learn to say "no" to avoid overwhelm and prioritize activities that truly bring you joy.
  • Supportive (S): Communicate openly with family about your needs and establish boundaries that protect your emotional well-being.
  • Cautious (C): Create a structured schedule to avoid overcommitment and ensure you have time for focused tasks and rejuvenation.

Consistent Self-Care and Emotion Management

Consistent self-care helps us manage our emotions and keeps our "hot buttons" from turning into explosions. When we regularly prioritize self-care aligned with our DISC personality, we become more emotionally resilient.

Understanding Your Children's Recharging Preferences

When we recognize our own preferences for self-care, it also opens our eyes to how our kids recharge.

Just like us, they have unique ways of replenishing their energy. By honoring our children's need for downtime, play, or quiet moments, we strengthen our connection with them and support their well-being. It's a win-win!

Building a Supportive Community

We're not meant to do this parenting thing alone. Seek support from peers, family, and community resources that align with your self-care preferences. Remember, collective resilience makes the parenting journey more fulfilling and less overwhelming.

Final Thoughts

As we navigate the transition into summer, commit to making self-care a non-negotiable part of your parenting journey.

Remember the quote, "Don't set yourself on fire to keep others warm."

Nurturing ourselves isn't just about us—it benefits our families too. By embracing self-care practices that resonate with our DISC personalities, setting healthy boundaries, and fostering supportive communities, we pave the way for resilient, thriving families.

Let's lead by example, showing our kids the importance of taking care of ourselves so we can show up fully for them.

Cheers to becoming the resilient parents our families need!

It's not selfish to make sure you're in a good spot. We also don't have to say that it's "for the kids" - it can absolutely be for us!
