Resilience of Young African Entrepreneurs and our duty to them

Often, we talk of job creation for youth - but less times do we talk of job creation by youth, for youth. After many years now as an eye witness to this dispensation, I am mostly battling generational guilt - and most of us should feel like me if we were to collectively recourse - and here is my case whomever cares. Our efforts and resources in the past and now have mostly journeyed to and through “established” actors - wether in the public, private or the voluntary (NGO) sectors - in hope that they would solve our problem - youth unemployment. But where has this landed us - unemployment only gets worse year by year. To the large part, a huge solution is ignored: young people, more so young entrepreneurs (acknowledging that not every young person is a capable entrepreneur) are already creating solutions that only require some extra support to start it scale - and they are a better and faster partner, because they are confronting a problem of their own / youth unemployment!
No matter their efforts, however, young African entrepreneurs face a myriad of challenges as they strive to turn their ideas into successful businesses. These include negative biases, lack of recognition and trust, systemic barriers - all which result in limited access to capital, inadequate infrastructure, and regulatory environments that can be complex and discouraging. Additionally, many lack the mentorship and networking opportunities that are essential for growth and expansion.
Despite these obstacles, the resilience and determination of Africa’s youth are evident in their relentless pursuit of innovation and progress. They are leveraging technology, creativity, and resourcefulness to overcome barriers and create opportunities not only for themselves but also for others. This entrepreneurial spirit is a beacon of hope for the continent’s economic future.
The Importance of Support
Supporting young entrepreneurs is not just a moral imperative; it is a strategic investment in Africa’s future. By providing them with the necessary tools, resources, and networks, we can help them scale their businesses, create more jobs, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

This support can take many forms. Governments and international partners can work to improve the business environment by streamlining regulations and investing in infrastructure. Private sector companies can offer mutual recognition and partnerships in form of business relationships, mentorship programs, training, and access to capital. Civil society organizations can advocate for policies that favor entrepreneurship and provide critical services such as legal advice and market research.
Walking Side by Side
The phrase “walking side by side” with Africa’s young entrepreneurs is more than just a metaphor; it represents a commitment to partnership and mutual support. It means recognizing their agency and autonomy while offering guidance and resources when needed. It involves listening to their needs, understanding their challenges, and tailoring support to address these specific issues.
By doing so, we can help create an ecosystem that fosters innovation, encourages risk-taking, and celebrates success. This collaborative approach not only empowers individual entrepreneurs but also contributes to broader societal development. It helps build resilient communities, promotes economic inclusion, and ensures that the benefits of growth are shared equitably.
Africa’s young people are not waiting for change; they are driving it. As we look to the future, it is clear that their energy, creativity, and determination will be pivotal in shaping the continent’s economic trajectory. By standing with them, supporting their endeavors, and addressing the systemic barriers they face, we can unlock their full potential and create a brighter future for all. Together, we can build a more prosperous, equitable, and vibrant Africa where young entrepreneurs thrive and lead the way.
