Resilience, often described as the ability to “bounce back,” is undoubtedly important. However, the mental health crisis is far too complex to be addressed by resilience alone. To truly support children’s well-being, we need a broader, more systemic approach—one that embraces adaptive robustness and the diversity of neurotypes.

Resilience is an appealing concept because it offers a straightforward narrative: if we can teach children to recover quickly from setbacks, they will thrive. While valuable, this perspective is incomplete. Resilience focuses on returning to a prior state of functioning after adversity, assuming that this state is ideal. However, many challenges faced by children today are chronic and systemic rather than episodic. For children with neurodiverse traits, such as those with autism or ADHD, resilience strategies designed for the average child often fail to account for their unique needs and energy dynamics. What if the goal were not to return to a previous state, but to adapt, transform, and thrive within complex, ever-changing environments?

This is where the concept of adaptive robustness becomes essential. Adaptive robustness refers to the ability to dynamically adjust, reorganize, and evolve in response to stressors while maintaining functionality. I heard Jeremy Vine talking about this on his radio 2 show yesterday. I did a few eye rolls when I heard the word resilience, but your words give much more context and layering to a far more complex issue than just making children “more resilient”, while doing little else alongside this (ie looking at the environment, relationships, neurodiversity, individual sensory needs etc)

Thank you, this is great. Empathy and problem solving from the ground up seem important. Kids (and workers!) need to see that at least one person cared enough to take the time to understand their problem or need from their perspective, is trying to figure out solutions rather than slapping on a one-sized approach, and is committed to doing the same over and over and over - They don't need success, so much as role-modelling of the complex problem solving approach, the validation of their importance that comes from you prioritising them and their needs, and the safety that you being committed and consistent brings to a sometimes uncontrollable and chaotic world. This is also true for building resilience in workplaces, with their workers.
