Dive into the deep with open water swimmer Bhakti Sharma, as she shares what she learned about resilience during her personal journey from the scorching heat of Rajasthan, India to the bone-chilling waters of her record-breaking swim in Antarctica and her courageous crossing of the English Channel. "In the middle of the ocean, there is nowhere to hide," Sharma says.

Radical Candor: How to Be a Great Boss Without Losing Your Humanity, by Kim Scott

Radical Candor is the sweet spot between managers who are obnoxiously aggressive on the one side and ruinously empathetic on the other.

Great bosses have a strong relationship with their employees, and Kim Scott has identified three simple principles for building better relationships with your employees: make it personal, get stuff done, and understand why it matters.

How to Build Resilience - Even When Things Feel Tough!

Resilience is one of those words we think we know the meaning of.

To many of us it means ‘bouncing back ‘, 'adapting', 'showing grit' or being ‘hardy'. It is often seen as a dynamic process encompassing positive adaptation within the context of significant adversity.

Yet this?seemingly simple concept?means so much more than this.

According to the Stockholm Resilience Centre :

"Resilience is the capacity of a system, be it an individual, a forest, a city or an economy, to deal with change and continue to develop. It is about how humans and nature can use shocks and disturbances like a financial crisis or climate change to spur renewal and innovative thinking."

Dr Kenneth Ginsburg talks about the 7 Cs, the essential building blocks of Resilience. ?

These include:

  1. Competence: is the ability to know how to handle stressful situations effectively.
  2. Confidence: is the belief in one's own abilities, and is rooted in competence.
  3. Connection: is building a strong sense of security and sense of belonging through friends, family, and community groups.
  4. Character: is knowing your own personal values, and building a strong sense of self-worth and confidence.
  5. Contribution: is knowing our ways of contributing to the world, and recognising the impact we have.
  6. Coping: is building a range of coping skills to better overcome life's challenges.
  7. Control: is knowing we have control over your own decisions and actions, and how to make choices that help us 'bounce back' from life's challenges.

?In a work setting, resilience is an employee’s capacity to adapt, cope, and respond positively to stressors in the workplace.

Resilience can also be viewed at an organisational level, the cultural frameworks and processes which facilitate an individual’s resilience.

Here, the CIPD have put together a fantastic guide for supporting both organisational and individual resilience.
