Native Americans: The OG Entrepreneurs
In my book, "The Native American Dream," we explore a multitude of lessons from the rich history and enduring spirit of Native American communities. Among these lessons, the spirit of entrepreneurship stands out as exceptionally relevant in today’s world.
Harvard Business School defines entrepreneurship as “the pursuit of opportunity beyond the resources you currently control.” ?For Peter Drucker, the essence of entrepreneurship is innovation and the ability to see and seize opportunities, transforming ideas into practical and aimed activities across all parts of an organization. These definitions perfectly capture the historical and entrepreneurial spirit of Native Americans, who were not only resourceful and resilient but also deeply committed to their communities and future generations.
Resourcefulness Over Resources:?Facing limitations in resources, Native Americans used their creativity and intimate knowledge of the land to thrive. This approach teaches us the value of leveraging what we have innovatively, emphasizing adaptability and strategic partnerships in modern entrepreneurship.
Continuous Learning:?The tradition of passing down knowledge and adapting to new challenges has been a cornerstone of Native American cultures. Embracing continuous learning today means seeking new knowledge, engaging in discussions, and learning from every situation—practices that drive growth and innovation.
Building Resilience:?More than a business strategy, resilience is a way of life. Native Americans demonstrated immense resilience, facing adversities head-on and using setbacks as opportunities to strengthen their communities and secure a sustainable future.
Community and Legacy:?Native Americans deeply value their tribal communities and governance structures, which taught them the importance of toughness in adversity. Their ancestors' lessons on perseverance were aimed at protecting and nurturing future generations, a timeless reminder of the long-term vision they have which is necessary for successful entrepreneurship.

As the HBS states, it further involves "the pursuit of opportunity beyond the resources you currently control". This can include having to trust one or more persons with skills the dreamer may not have. Human nature being what it is, each person involved in the entrepreneur's dream should be "on the same page". Discord can cause many dreams to "go up in smoke".
