Resilience - Community

The tragic news of former Indian cricketer David Johnson's suicide is a stark reminder of the pressures and challenges faced not only by sports professionals but by individuals across various fields. It underscores the importance of mental health and the need for resilience in adversity.

David Brooks, in his poignant piece "How Do You Serve a Friend in Despair?" published in the New York Times, delves into the depths of despair and how friends and loved ones can offer support.

The importance of presence, listening, and providing a non-judgmental space for distressed people can not be emphasised enough. This approach is crucial as it helps individuals feel understood and less isolated.

Why are we reluctant to seek help?

There are several reasons why people might be reluctant to seek help:

  1. Stigma: Mental health issues often carry a stigma, making people hesitant to admit they are struggling.
  2. Perceived Weakness: There is a common misconception that seeking help is a sign of weakness rather than strength.
  3. Isolation: In despair, individuals may feel isolated and believe no one can understand their pain.
  4. Fear of Burdening Others: Many people do not want to be seen as a burden to their family and friends.
  5. Lack of Awareness: Sometimes, individuals are unaware of the resources available or how to access help.

Seek help!

To counteract these barriers, fostering a supportive environment where seeking help is normalized and encouraged is essential. This can be achieved through:

  • Building Communities: Engage in communities where mutual support is a cornerstone. Being part of a supportive network can provide a sense of belonging and a safety net during tough times.
  • Proactive Support: Look out for each other, especially when someone suddenly goes silent or shows signs of distress. Check-in regularly and offer support without waiting to be asked.
  • Promoting Resilience: Resilience is a skill that can be developed over time. Encourage practices that build mental strength, such as mindfulness, physical exercise, and pursuing hobbies.
  • Education and Awareness: Educate people about mental health, the signs of mental distress, and the resources available for help. Awareness can reduce stigma and empower individuals to seek assistance.
  • Unconditional Space: Offer a non-judgmental and safe space for others to express their feelings. Sometimes, knowing someone is there to listen can make a significant difference.
  • Professional Help: Be careful about online platforms managed by techies who suffer from a lack of therapeutic expertise. Seek professional expertise.

The loss of a cricketer is a sobering call to action for all of us. We must prioritize mental health, support one another, and continuously build resilience.

Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

We are all here to learn, grow, and support each other through life's challenges.

Rest in peace, David Johnson.
