Resilience Amidst Challenges: Building the Foundations of My African Startup - LDN 2 NGN ???????? (Part 1)

Towards the end of 2023, I was eagerly anticipating my visit to Nigeria, especially in a year filled with unexpected challenges – my business partners departed post-Soho House showcase in February, leading to the recruitment of new Co-founders, whom I am grateful to have on board, CMO, CTO and COO.

Life threw numerous hardships my way – a family member diagnosed with cancer, the loss of another relative, I was dealing with regularly visits to Charing Cross Hospital, and the daily wrestling match of my corporate job. Those 7 am starts are not for the faint hearted.

Tele's Tip: You have the opportunity to pursue your aspirations and achieve milestones, yet the certainty of tomorrow is unknown. Taking a genuine break, connecting with family and friends who uplift your spirit, is the ultimate blessing in life. Grant yourself compassion and consider planning a trip in 2024.

Though I faced battles in 2023 that I can't fully disclose, I want you to know, I'm standing firm. Despite the hurt and wounds, I haven't succumbed to darkness; my light continues to shine. In the face of adversity, I am the type of woman to confront it head-on. Personally, the challenges of last year enabled me to discover a strength and courage previously unknown.

Even though I need to take my own 'Tele's Tip.' I realised I'm consistently working, not to escape reality, but because I genuinely love building my business, career, and passion projects. Therefore, Nigeria wasn't merely a leisure trip; it was a strategic business move, an opportunity to connect with designers, mentors, and others.

Similar to my approach for Ghana in 2020, where I emailed Directors at consulting firms before setting foot there for introduction meetings, I followed the same game plan before heading to Nigeria. It worked! My relentless search for opportunities led me to discover a gem - Entertainment Week Lagos (EWL).

EWL - December 2023
Entertainment Week Lagos, a week-long exhibition featuring panels, events, and masterclasses, particularly caught my attention was their Innovation Lab. This two-day programme, promised to support entrepreneurs like myself, provide mentorship from Techstars Alumni, covering everything from elevator pitches to live pitches in the Deal Room in front of c-suite—an intense and fast-paced environment that aligns with my preferences.

I must confess that upon learning of my acceptance, it was during my first week in Lagos, leaving little time to celebrate. I swiftly shifted into action mode, arranging a driver, conducting research, preparing documents, and keeping the Kouture Paradisé team informed while also preparing social media content.

When attending any professional event, programme or meeting, I make sure to present myself in the best possible way (first impressions matter), and come prepared to the party. I personally prefer to foresee and plan for every detail - my experience has taught me this lesson.

Being strategic with plans A, B, and C is crucial to me because I'm passionate about creating a business that transcends individuality – something that will significantly impact Nigeria's economy and generate employment. It has a purpose.

Hence, why I was wanted to sacrifice 'Detty December' to work and establish the foundation of my business in Nigeria - proving my intention, passion and commitment. My upcoming articles will delve into the EWL Programme, introducing the incredible people I met and sharing insights gained, ranging from success stories to overcoming challenges. Grateful to Entertainment Week Lagos for the opportunity and ending my 2023 with great excitement and hope for the future.

Excited to bring you along this reflective journey of my time in Nigeria.

See you next week.
