RESIGNATION LETTER

It was after a gap of a few years that I spoke with XY. He was one of my ex-team members and a good team player with sound knowledge of the work area assigned to him and was a self-starter in his own right. It was good to speak with him and know his bearings.

?

He had informed me earlier itself that he wanted to speak with me about something important so I guessed that it may either be related to investments/trading or related to him looking out for a change of job. It turned out to be somewhat on similar lines. I cautioned him on the perils of indulging in Intraday trading while still in a full-time job and since he insisted, I guided him to the best possible workaround. He was satisfied with the response.

?

He then talked about the present job and because of certain constraints beyond his control, he had to accept the job but he was not “liking” it. I coud now sense where the discussion is likely to go. We kept talking about his job and he then dropped a bombshell that on account of a very small matter related to the pay/leave, he had resigned from the company, however, his functional head was away so his resignation was not yet accepted.

?

XY was considering turning as a consultant and possibly render freelance services to those who may be in need or I help him find a new home. I guided him to some of the good openings that I have come across and asked him to explore there, but he said that nowadays, without connections it is impossible to get hired.

?

I have been approached with similar requests by many people including those with whom I may not have worked directly or even those whom I have not met in person. And, this is how I guided XY –

?

1.??? Based on my discusions with him, I gathered that his functional head was known to me and is a very good not only in his domain but also a good human being – this is a rare combination that one can have in a boss. I asked XY to immediately send a message withdrawing his resignation.

2.??? I explained to him that one needs to realize the significance of a paycheck (I have always respected as an employee and now more as a trader where there is no assured salary) and how not having a paycheck in hand could have cascading impacts on his professional as well as personal life.

3.??? It is very hard to find the job that is perfectly matching with one’s expectations as no one is perfect. One has to learn the art of give and take especially as and employee who is not on the right side of the age bar.

4.??? Candidates with references and connections do get selected on a priority basis as there is a level confidence that the recruiter has on the person who has referred the candidate. So there is nothing wrong with it.

5.??? One has to take into account the age factor, net take home pay, family budget, and the like before even contemplating a change of job.

6.??? Quitting an existing job without having an appointment letter is a sure No Go.

7.??? Decisions related to money, life, family, relations, and similar need to be thought through with a calm and composed mind and not in a revenge / anger mode just because I do not like the way the things are.

?

At the end of the discussion, XY was convinced that what he had done was in a rush of emotions and he agreed to set things right and follow the guided path.

?

About 13 years ago, when XY was my team member, he had resigned citing a totally unacceptable reason. At that time, I spent more than an hour in working out the numbers for him as his cause of resignation was net salary related. I went to the extent of drawing up his monthly and annual budget and showed him that if he quits, he will be at a severe loss. Wiser senses prevailed then and I hope they will now as well.

?

The above is not a new story – it keeps playing out in the corporate world every day, but I chose to pen it down so that if whoever is suffering from similar situations she gets to know what needs to be done ?before emailing resignation letter.

?

Winners Never Quit & Quitters Never Win is what I read when I was in college and each time such an incident comes to light, I am reminded of this saying.
