Residents Push Back Against Proposed Costco in South Surrey

A new Costco development in South Surrey has sparked community opposition. Over 320 residents have signed a petition to stop the project at 1891 and 1947 164 Street in the Grandview Heights area. Concerns include traffic, infrastructure, environmental impact, and property values.

Alexis Wardle, who lives in Berkeley Village townhomes near the site, started the petition. She explained her worries about the lack of a buffer zone between her neighborhood and the Costco parking lot. "This development will increase congestion and disrupt our peaceful community," Wardle said.

The petition also highlights safety risks from added traffic near Ta'talu Elementary School. The growing number of students raises fears about accidents and reduced walkability. Residents want to protect the safe environment their families currently enjoy.

The proposed Costco South Surrey opposition also focuses on road access. Only one main road leads in and out, which could create severe traffic jams, especially during peak hours. The petition emphasizes that this issue could affect everyone in the area, not just those closest to the site.

Environmental concerns also play a role. Wardle and others worry that building a gas station in this ecologically sensitive area could harm local ecosystems. Residents believe that such a project should respect zoning laws and protect natural spaces.

The petition calls on Surrey City Council to reject the proposal or require Costco to address these concerns. Requested changes include upgrading roads, enforcing zoning compliance, and preserving ecologically sensitive land. Residents urge the council to prioritize the community’s needs.
