Resetting Your Rhythm

Resetting Your Rhythm

What do you need? Sometimes we get so busy we don't even stop and think about what we really need. If you're running a business or constantly pouring out to others, you might be feeling drained.

Maybe you've been busting your tail but feel that you're not where you need to be. Or, maybe things are going well but you can't remember the last time you took a vacation or even a day off. Maybe your health has been affected, you're anxious all the time, or you're not sleeping well. In any of these scenarios, you might need to hit the reset button. Your rhythm is off.

Tempo issues

“Pick a beat, Dori!” That sarcastic comment came from a guitarist - in a church band! I had just started trying my hand at percussion. I had no experience and no lessons but he didn't know that. All he knew was that I couldn't decide which instruments I wanted to add or which beats, so I was all over the place.

I'm sure that, in my excitement, I was either ahead or behind the beat. Or maybe I was just adding too many beats to the mix. After all, I had all these drums to choose from, plus tambourines, shakers, chimes, and blocks! I was like a kid in a candy store!

What I've learned over the years is that less is often more. Sometimes you need to dial things back, wait for the beat, and then just “follow the drummer” and add what's needed.?

Changing the beat

In drumming, as in life, sometimes you need to take a step back and ask yourself:

  1. What's not working?
  2. What do I need to change? Or drop?

Have you ever heard someone take a song and completely change the tempo? It has a totally different feel but it fits that person. Maybe you need to switch things up so that it fits the season you're in now.

I've done that a lot over the years. Seasons change. In this season, for example, I realized that my time for teaching young kids has passed. It's no longer fun, which is one of my core values, and, since they're just drum classes, I'm not providing healing, which is my Divine Assignment.

My unique form of drum therapy has been providing great results and often very fast! So that's the lane I need to stay in, whether I'm doing private sessions or group events.

Here's some feedback from an empowerment event I did recently for budding entrepreneurs (above photo): “Our Young Entrepreneurs had a blast! An abundance of creativity came forth from everyone! Thanks, Dori!” ~ Sheyenne Kreamer, Triangle Solutions Alliance/We Care Partnership, Raleigh, NC

When you need to rest (and then ramp up)

In music, rests are added for a reason. That gives more dynamics to the tune and usually signals that the next section is going to ramp up. Well, especially in rock music.

The world won't come to an end if you take time off. You need to give your overactive brain a rest. This can give you more clarity about your next steps and more energy when it's time to ramp up. Take a break, take a breath...and tap out some beats!

If you have no idea how drum therapy can help you reset your mindset and your personal rhythm so you can gain more clarity and creativity to move forward, check out this short video:
