The Reset. Why Fasting Is The Most Powerful Drug… (And How You Can Use It To Break Your Quarantine Malaise)
"I'm not fasting to lose weight anymore. I'm fasting because I really like it,” Phil Libin, Ex-CEO of Evernote, CEO of All Turtles
It’s been over 114 hours I had my last regular meal.
But I am neither tired nor exhausted – in fact, I’m currently at my best.
This is what I call “The Reset”.
A regular two to five day fast that helps me to get rid of malaise, fatigue and helps me to refocus on my priorities.
But before you think I am an irresponsible idiot let me show you that I am not alone in this.
Our Fasting Crew
Other than Phil Libin there are many other giants that nowadays practice what’s called Intermittent Fasting.
Amongst them you can count Tim Ferriss, Peter Attia, Dominic d’Agostino, doctor Joseph Mercola, Peter Diamandis, Serge Faguet and many, many others.
There are many benefits to fasting, some of which include:
- Improved cognitive performance
- Reduced risk of certain cancer
- Increased longevity
- Reduced inflammation
- Feeling invincible when you do it
Why does it work like that?
Ketosis on demand
If you haven’t lived under the rock for the past few years you’ve definitely heard about ketogenic diets, which imitate FASTED STATE – known as ketosis.
There are many benefits to ketosis, but let’s be clear: our societies haven’t prepared us to perform in ketosis on an everyday basis. Especially during the quarantine (fresh avocados anyone?).
With that in mind let’s see what you can do on a regular basis to get the benefits of ketosis without having to adhere to a strict ketogenic diet.
Enter The Reset
“You’re going die if you continue this! You’re going to develop ketoacidosis!” – my mother exclaimed.
I smiled over my coffee mug. It was the sixth day of my first 155 hour fat fast - the Reset.
My mom is a doctor. Specifically, a diabetologist.
Yet again I've learned that most doctors’ knowledge about nutrition, fasting and human physiology in practical terms is obsolete.
Not only obsolete.
It’s Wrong. Dead Wrong.
And unfortunately it brings
But it wasn’t always like that.
Since the ancient times fasting has been used by doctors in every culture. Each and every major religion shares a common thread of using fasting for spiritual growth and healing.
Actually the most powerful hypnotist on the planet did a 40-day fast on a desert.
As well as many other ancient influencers such as Buddha and Mohammad.
If they could do it, why not us?
There’s a short story behind it.
Brainwashed by the USDA
For the majority of my life I felt hungry… despite eating at least five meals a day and adhering to the Food Pyramid.
I grew up in Southern Poland in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.
My family consists of eight medical doctors and none of them knew anything about nutrition other than the conventional wisdom of “eating less”, “moving more” and “consuming five meals a day”.
None of that is true, but in fact their approach hasn’t changed much until today.
As a result of this thinking in my childhood our everyday eating habits were dictated by cereal, bread and pasta.
Which made us all fat, sleepy and constantly looking for snacks.
All this thanks to the USDA guidelines issued 40 years earlier.
Is sugar worse than COVID-19?
Nowadays sugar kills humans than hunger. This is NOT an exaggeration.
In fact many of the COVID-19 deaths can be associated with the poor lifestyle choices that had become a default all around the world.
In the past you might have thought that you’re going to cut out sugar from your diet and from your life.
I know I’ve been there.
But here’s a problem – sugar is addictive. And unless you take a decisive step to get rid of it from your life it’s going to haunt you for the rest of your life.
I don’t mean to say “never have a birthday cake”.
I mean to say that if you regularly indulge sugary drinks, fruit juices and snacks you’re habituating your brain to seek pleasure in sugar and suffer from chronic inflammation.
Global “food” corporations (Coca Cola, Mars, etc.) employ some of the best wizards on the planet to manipulate your decisions. I am a hypnotist, I know how it's done.
The Reset Cure
If you want to break a negative habit loop the best way to do it is to take a decisive step.
One moment at a time.
This is why I call my fasting regimen “The Reset”. Because it can “Reset” my negative habits and patterns associated with food.
Best of all – my meals simply TASTE better each and every time.
So how do you perform a Reset of your own?
It’s easier than you’d think.
The Reset Protocol
“So, what is the problem with water fasting? The major concern is that more than 85,000 chemicals have been created in the past century, and their presence in our environment, our food, and the products we use every day makes exposure to them virtually unavoidable (…) Most of these chemicals are fat-soluble toxins; as a result, when your body is exposed to them, they are stored in your fat cells. (…)
When the weight you lose is in the form of fat, it will typically release the toxins that have been stored in your fat into your bloodstream, exposing you to a flood of toxins.” - Dr Joseph Mercola, "KetoFast" (p. 53)
I won’t encourage you to go for a full water-only fast. I didn’t do it myself and I wouldn’t expect anyone to do it. In our modern world the cons outweigh the pros.
But fasting with supplements, salt and a little bit of pure fat? That’s a different story.
The Reset Formula:
Supplements:
- Magnesium
- Salt
Liquids:
- Coffee
- Water
- Tea
Fats:
- MCT Oil
- Coconut Oil
- Ghee butter
That’s it.
The Rules:
- Take a long walk outside in the morning. This will make your transition to ketosis much easier. (even if you take a walk in a park or a garden)
- Drink a ton of water, coffee and tea (I like blending my coffee with fat).
- If you feel tired/annoyed go outside and grab some water.
- Expect pans of hunger coming and going like waves – they’ll become less frequent over time.
Most people report a feeling of “ketone high” on the third or fourth day of the week.
This is a state of increased creativity, focus and vigilance. It is a great time to refocus on your priorities and direction in life – especially if you’re in a lockdown right now.
The End
How do you break the Reset?
- Have a light meal in the early afternoon – perhaps a salad or a soup
- Celebrate your meal – turn off your phone focus on the taste and structure of your food.
- Congratulate yourself. You’ve just extended the limits of what you thought was possible.
