The time has come to break the rinse and repeat cycle on employee engagement
Each year I work with many businesses. Each of them has a set of employee engagement priorities. They are probably similar to yours. Something like this:
1. communication, listening or involvement
2. leadership, visibility or accountability
3. innovation, ideas and problem solving.
It’s ironic isn’t it as these are the very things that when improved would REALLY make your business a great place to work and lift results exponentially.
BUT…despite effort and time spent, these issues come around every year. Why? Because we frequently encourage managers to focus on business wide themes, rather than what matters most to their teams.
Time to get out of the Engagement Trap
People and Culture Teams can only do SO MUCH, consequently many businesses get caught in an “engagement trap”. Their managers are unsure how to make the difference, they feel like actions have been pushed on them from HR with little ownership. People Managers often end up doing nothing because they have no ownership of a plan.
The business wide cookie cutter approach isn’t working. Many scores haven’t moved in years. Now, more than ever it’s time to enlist a new way. A RESET!
Businesses need a plan that works for their managers, their teams and for HR. Not just a corporate wide campaign.

1 年Tim Price-Walker FRGS so glad you agree. I am utterly convinced that a reset is an important part of breaking stagnant engagement and elevating good scores. My latest insight are quite scary. Suggesting many managers are further from the mark than we believe! There is a huge gap between conveying business strategy and how this shows up in the manager/ employee conversation for example!

1 年Hi Paul Matthews - a great post. Having worked within P&C teams, I definitely see the challenges in the workplace and the tension between strategic objectives and everyday tasks for all the reasons you mention....employee engagement often ends up falling into this 'task' category. e.g. the annual point in time staff survey becomes a dreaded 'rinse and repeat' chore for everyone! A reset is definitely required and a fresh re-framed approach with new ideas! Employee engagement should always be a priority, strategic objective.
