Academia is full of research publication-based Ponzi schemes, where the publish or perish model drives open-access publishers. We need to get together and develop a system that breaks this system.
Firstly we need to define a better system of citation-based metrics: an h-index that looks at the author order and number of authors and also weights the discipline so that appropriate comparison between disciplines does not create biases.
Then we need to publish journals that have a business model where reviewers and editors are paid for their services - it can be either open-access or subscription-based, but papers should be published within a month of submission. We also need to credit reviewers and editors, where names are published in the acknowledgement of the paper, which is further weighted into the h-index.
