In honor of mental health awareness month.?Take action.?Stigma of mental wellness is over.
The pandemic has taken a toll on Americans and there is no denying that it will get worse before it gets better and that Burnout is real and on the rise.?The extended state of chaos, not knowing week over week what the new landscape would be, the heightened anxiety we all lived with and the ongoing impact of loneliness and isolation have increased the prevalence of mental health conditions.?Acknowledging mental health conditions no differently than we do health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension or physical conditions is necessary to provide the necessary safe spaces and care for all individuals impacted.?We are human beings, not human doings.
The US Surgeon General, Dr Vivek Murthy released a Framework in November 2022 and a statement to say, “A healthy workforce is the foundation for thriving organizations and healthier communities”.?The acknowledgment from the Surgeon General that we must address Mental Health and Well-Being and that we now have an ICD-10 Code (insurance billing code) for Burnout shines a light on the severity of this health problem.
If you haven’t seen the numbers it might come as a surprise to you that mental health is still on the decline.?According to the Surgeon General’s report 76% of U.S. workers reported at least one symptom of a mental health condition and 84% of respondents said their workplace conditions had contributed to at least one mental health challenge.?That also means that people are becoming more aware of their health and looking for places that value it too.?Tolerance for unhealthy work conditions that increase mental dis-ease is low with 81% of workers reporting that they will be looking for workplaces that support mental health in the future.?Does that sound like you??We’re seeing this trend across companies and have been inspired to support.
According to the Surgeon General there are 5 essential elements that support workplace mental health and well-being.?They are Protection from Harm, Connection & Community, Work-Life Harmony, Mattering at Work and Opportunity for Growth with each supporting 2-3 of our human needs as created by Maslow’s Hierarchy of human needs.
These 5 essential elements are not restricted to our work life…..they apply in our day to day lives, our relationships, at the gym and in our social groups.?The framework applies to all areas of our life as we reset post pandemic!
There is an intention to focus on safe spaces, create trusted relationships and partnerships, create environments that allow for personal purpose to align with work purpose, offer praise and lift one another up in times of growth and spend time acknowledging successes and achievements, no matter how small.
We all want to feel like we belong, we matter, our voice is heard, we are an active contributor, we can achieve success and we are better tomorrow than we were today!
Most recently, Dr Vivek Murthy released an additional Framework to address the Loneliness Epidemic post pandemic.?The acknowledgment that isolation may lead to chronic health conditions and mental health challenges is real. To address loneliness, Dr Vivek Murthy shared that to re-establish America and it’s health; we need to create communities where there is opportunity for positive social interactions, and relationships formed.?We need to focus on relationships built on trust and foster collaboration and teamwork.
