Research on Permanently Expanding the Child Tax Credit, Upward Mobility From Poverty, and More.

Permanently Expanding the Child Tax Credit Would Increase Kids’ Lifetime Earnings and Education

Urban Institute research on a larger expansion of the child tax credit (CTC) – a key topic of discussion in the 2024 presidential election – underscores that long-term investments in kids during childhood can have enduring returns that go beyond the many short-term benefits.

Urban’s analysis shows that a permanent CTC expansion would have long-term economic benefits for children who receive it, among them:

  • Boosted high school and college graduation rates
  • Increased earnings in adulthood, by as much as 10 to 17 percent
  • Growth in annual income by the time CTC recipients are 30 years old

Do the earnings increase because the CTC allows children to stay in school, especially in lower income families? And by staying in school allows them to earn a high school/college degree?
