RESEARCH NEWS: Mitochondrial dysfunction influences brain ageing & disease, fasting for greater healthspan, sleep enhances brain health and longevity

Functional medicine to reclaim health, prevent disease and extend healthspan.
Here are three articles that arrive at simple, logical, conclusions for healthy ageing, and do it with data.
Turns out, sleep is pretty good for clearing out brain waste, which is good for your brain, and in turn, long-term health. Incredibly obvious that sleep helps you think clearly, but often it is the basics we tend to take for granted. Don’t skip out on sleep. Don’t just sleep when you’re dead. Sleep, lots, when you want to be at your peak.
Protracted fasting is one of the best things most people (not always appropriate - see your practitioner) can do for their health. We have known this for quite some time, millennia, in fact. Fasting is coming back in vogue though as science catches up with, and validates, ancient knowledge; in this case we are now able to observe positive proteomic changes, yay!
Your mitochondria (little cellular powerhouses) cause all sorts of problems when they are dysfunctioning. Think of them like little power plants, which do really well at generating energy, but if you don’t do a good job at controlling where the heat is going, or radiation starts escaping from your furnace, they can cause all sorts of hot mess. Mitochondria, when not functioning well, in addition to not generating energy well, are causing a lot of oxidative stress, which damages cells and results in inflammation, both of which cause ageing. Look after your mitochondria!

Mitochondrial dysfunction influences brain ageing and disease
Mitochondrial dysfunction is highlighted as a pivotal element in brain ageing and associated diseases, playing a significant role in energy shortages, elevated oxidative stress, and neuronal harm, driving the advancement of neurodegenerative conditions.
The science of fasting for healthier ageing
The study reveals that a 7-day complete caloric restriction triggers significant multi-organ proteome changes in humans, suggesting potential benefits for longevity and ageing.
Sleep enhances brain health and longevity
Neuronal activity boosts cerebrospinal fluid flow to remove brain waste during sleep, potentially affecting longevity and ageing.?
