In this article we are going to learn about OpenShift and how it works and what is the need for these tools in the market and what are the main use0case it solving for the industry. As we know openshift Plateform or tool is provided by the RedHat. it is totally based on Kubernetes we can this is the upgrade version of Kubernetes. it's totally based on Kubernetes as K8S is open-source so redhat takes its base from K8S and customizes that tool and makes it ready for industry to use this product. they do lots of customization over the K8S.that means this is the own project of K8S.
On the Base of the above para, we get to know that OpenShift provides us a platform as a service. where we can deploy our application
What is PAAS ?
PaaS (platform as a service) is a cloud computing model where a third-party provider delivers hardware and software tools to users over the internet. Usually, these tools are needed for application development. A PaaS provider hosts the hardware and software on its own infrastructure.
What is Container>
A container is a standard unit of software that packages up code and all its dependencies so the application runs quickly and reliably from one computing environment to another. ... Secure: Applications are safer in containers and Docker provides the strongest default isolation capabilities in the industry.
What is OpenShift ??
OpenShift is a family of containerization software products developed by Red Hat. Its flagship product is the OpenShift Container Platform — an on-premises platform as a service built around Docker containers orchestrated and managed by Kubernetes on a foundation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. OpenShift is a layered system wherein each layer is tightly bound with the other layer using Kubernetes and Docker cluster. ... In this model, Docker helps in the creation of lightweight Linux-based containers and Kubernetes supports the task of orchestrating and managing containers on multiple hosts.
History of OpenShift
OpenShift originally came from Red Hat's acquisition of Makara- a company with a proprietary PaaS solution based on Linux containers. Even though OpenShift was announced in May 2011, it was proprietary technology and did not become open-source until May of 2012. Up until v3, the container technology and container orchestration technology used custom-developed technologies. This changed in v3 with the adoption of Docker as the container technology, and Kubernetes as the container orchestration technology. The v4 product has many other architectural changes - a prominent one being a shift to using CRI-O as the container runtime (and Podman for interacting with pods and containers), and Buildah as the container build tool, thus breaking the exclusive dependency on Docker.
Why do we need OpenShift?
OpenShift enables efficient container orchestration, allowing rapid container provisioning, deploying, scaling, and management. ... By streamlining and automating the container automation process, OpenShift enables cybersecurity developers to focus on accelerating application development, updates, and product distribution.
Is Kubernetes vs OpenShift Diff?
OpenShift is a commercial product, while Kubernetes is an open-source project. An OpenShift subscription enables users to get paid support. The subscription also includes CloudForms, which helps organizations manage private, public, and virtual infrastructure.
USe-Case Of Openshift
Enable DevOps and department-wide collaboration
The DevOps process relies upon transparent communication between all involved parties. Containerization provides a convenient means of enabling your IT operations staff to test instances of a new app. OpenShift assists this process by making it easy to test apps throughout your IT architecture without being impeded by framework conflicts, deployment issues, or language discrepancies. One industry that can benefit from OpenShift’s enablement of enhanced DevOps processes is the Webhosting and development field. Companies competing in this industry are constantly racing to offer their customers enhanced functionality. For instance, as web commerce increases by leaps and bounds, companies and individuals progressively look to sell their products over the web. They can do this by adding web sales functionality to their own sites via widgets designed for this purpose, or by purchasing sites with built-in sales functionality.
Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform Takes Digital Innovation Into the Fast Lane With BMW Group
The BMW Group wanted a more flexible application infrastructure to provide more agile development and IT operations methodologies. Using the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, the Group could provide a more secure and stable platform that allowed for container-based deployments. It also allows traditional applications to coexist alongside new, cloud-native, and container-based applications. The BMW Group can now choose the technology that most closely delivers on its needs at any moment in time. Ashesh Badanivice, president and general manager of OpenShift Red Hat said, “The BMW Group shows just how an organization can embrace agile methodologies and modern container technologies to deliver business value and an enhanced customer experience.”
LogistiCare Accelerates Flexibility and Speed of Business
Annually, LogistiCare manages more than 70 million non-emergency medical rides. Management wanted a reliable platform that would keep up with the company’s growth and complexity. The organization implemented an infrastructure consisting of Red Hat JBoss Middleware, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, and Ansible by Red Hat. “The beauty of Red Hat software is that it’s open. If we want to add new capabilities somewhere, we’re not locked in or limited in our ability to go to outside vendors,” said Michael Quintero, Enterprise Solutions Architect, LogistiCare.LogistiCare is now able to get new features added much faster. They’ve also reduced their annual operating costs by approximately $6 million.
