Today is the birthday of Gustav Ludwig Hertz (22/07/1887) - whom the mankind has venerated and respected so much that even Nobel Prize was given to him. It is pertinent to ask question - what was the purpose of research? Why was he doing whatever he did? What was the ultimate aim of his research? Did our planet got any benefit from his research? Did our society as Mankind got some happiness from his research? Did he succeed in his ultimate aim?
The answer to all these questions is disappointing. His aim was "Weapons of Mass Destruction". His goal was accomplished. He was able to create weapons of mass destruction and therefore he was venerated. Are we sensible civilization? Are we trying to venerate and promote someone who is trying to promote weapons of mass destruction?
We have to re-set our priorities. The priorities of mankind should be more important than the priorities of nations.
Aristotle posited that the highest human good is eudaimonia, often translated as "happiness" or "flourishing." He argued that all human activities aim towards achieving this state, where one lives in accordance with virtue and realizes their potential. Let the purpose of every research be "happiness".
As researchers we should shed the boundaries of nations and raise our voice against research on weapons of mass destruction.

7 个月Gustav Ludwig Hertz's work did contribute to the development of quantum mechanics and electron microscopy, it is also true that his research was used for military purposes, including the development of atomic bombs. It's essential to consider the ethical implications of scientific research and its potential applications. The pursuit of knowledge should indeed prioritize human well-being, happiness, and the betterment of society as a whole. Aristotle's concept of Eudaimonia is a valuable framework for evaluating the purpose and impact of research. By prioritizing virtue, human flourishing, and the greater good, researchers can ensure that their work contributes positively to society. I would like to say that Researchers should consider the ethical implications of their work, prioritize research that promotes human well-being and happiness, and Speak out against research focused on weapons of mass destruction Lastly Collaborate across national boundaries to promote responsible research practices. Let's strive for a research culture that aligns with Aristotle's vision of human flourishing and prioritizes the well-being of humanity and the planet.

7 个月Enlightening lines to the researcher, before you take any actions have sensible thought what footsteps I'm leaving through my research. So, research can be conducted for various purposes, and its application can lead to either positive or negative consequences. But positive studying factors should contribute to the well-being, happiness, life satisfaction and enhancing quality of life. Environmental Sustainability and promoting eco-friendly practices should be essential. Research can have unintended consequences, and even well-intentioned research can be misused. Therefore, it's crucial to consider the ethical implications of research and ensure that it's well alliance with values and promotes human well-being and happiness.
